RECORD TYPE

A RECORD TYPE entity may impose type restrictions on Records. An entity of this type must be referenced by an INDEX ENTRY so that application programs can distinguish between different types of records.

Three record types are used to group other records TER indicates the end of a chain, while MODEL/ENDMDL surround groups of ATOM, HETATM. TER and similar records. 

To this category belong only two record types JRNL and REMARK, which in turn have their own detailed inner structures. Examples of the two records types arc presented later.

A well-developed records management program that defines rules by which records and documents are handled from creation to retirement is necessary for a successful electronic data archiving process. ProSa reads all it needs to know about a protein from a file in PDB format. A detailed description of this standard format is given at the RCSB website [2]. Of all record types within a PDB file, only the ATOM records are used by ProSa. They contain both the amino acid sequence of a certain protein chain and the atomic coordinates (example PDB files come with the ProSa distribution). If a PDB file contains more than one chain, only one is read. The first chain is read by default, other chains can be specified by providing the respective chain identifier. All molecules other than polypeptides are ignored. For energy calculations, ProSa takes into account C° and atoms. Care has to be taken when dealing with residue... 

The risk assessment process can be conducted by examining record types to see if they are GxP or non-GxP, and then applying severity checks, likelihood, and probability of detection criteria, as illustrated in Figure 15.2. The most severe scenarios shonld be linked to direct patient/consnmer impact. GxP noncompliance and broken license conditions are severe in their own right bnt not as critical as patient/consumer health in this analysis." Its likelihood will be influenced by the degree of human error in how the record is input and used. The probability of detection needs to take into account the probability of the impacted record being used. Once failure modes are understood, then the appropriate design controls can be introduced. These should be documented and validated as part of the computer system life cycle discussed earher in this book. 

As can be seen in Figure 4.1, the application contains 11 record types which are a mixture of referral eg, bibliographic references, experts, institutions) and technical eg, industrial processes, technologies and wastes) information. 

These record types are augmented by a mailing and correspondence sub-system which allow the registration of customers, together with their interests in INTIB products and services.

Complete citations to references ate included. Authors names are stored in a separate record type. Reciprocal links connect authors and references. Provision for titles of articles. Chemical Abstract Services references, CODEN, ISSN or ISBN numbers are included. A field for storing comments to references is available. Codes that indicate if the reference contains theory, experimental data or correlation or has a review have been added with recent references. For recent references that contain experimental data, codes to indicate the particular properties measured are also included. This allows extraction of current content information. Prior to adding the data, the references containing experimental data can be linked to the compound or compounds and to the property code. Hence the database also serves as a bibliographic database.

A record type is composed of a number of scalar or composite objects of any type. There are no predefined record types available in the STANDARD package.
