Recommended Dietary Allowances calories

World War II created the condition for the formulation of the Recommended Dietary Allowances of the Committee on Food and Nutrition, United States National Research Council (1941). The goal of this table and of its subsequent revisions (1945,1948, 1953) is much higher than any previously sought— the building up of our people to a level of health and vigor never before attained or dreamed of. The table itself is the most detailed that had yet been devised, providing allowances for calories, protein, calcium, iron, and six vitamins for men and women and for children of various ages. [Pg.217]

Thiamine requirements must be related in any logical standard to the calorie requirements, but there is no general agreement on how much thiamine is needed per 1000 calories. Experimental evidence has given values ranging from a low of 0.13 mg. per 1000 calories (Holt, 1944) up to 0.44 mg. per 1000 calories (Alexander et al., 1946). The Canadian Dietary Standard uses 0.33 to 0.35 mg. per 1000 calories, and the U.S. Recommended Dietary Allowances uses 0.5 mg. per 1000 calories. [Pg.227]

LACTATION. It has been estimated that the production of about 30 oz (850 to 900 ml) of breast milk daily expends from 750 to 900 Calories (kcal) per day. However, it is expected that most healthy women who consume adequate food energy during pregnancy will have gained from 4 to 9 lb (2 to 4 kg) of extra body fat which will furnish some of the extra calories for lactation. Therefore, the Recommended Dietary Allowances specify that about 500 extra Calories (kcal) should be consumed daily during lactation. [Pg.156]

Most forms of carrots are high in water content (88 to 92%) and low in calories (29 to 42 kcal per 100 g). However, they are excellent sources of vitamin A, since a 3 1/2 oz (100 g) serving provides more than double the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for adults. [Pg.175]

DV = Daily Value. %DVs are reference numbers based on the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA), Percent DVs are based on a 2000 calorie diet. They were developed to help consumers determine if a food contains a lot or a little of a specific nutrient. The DV for vitamin A is 5000 ID (1 500 micrograms retinol which is 1500pg RAE). Most food labels do not list a food s vitamin A content. The %DV listed in Table 1 refer to the vitamin A provided in one serving. To date, the National Research Council has not established Recommended Daily Allowances for PUFA. However, an upper limit of 10% of the dietary energy eis PUFA is consider safe. For a man consuming 2,700 Calories (kcal) or a woman consuming 2,000 Calories (kcal), this translates to 30 g and 22 g per day, respectively. [Pg.336]

The reduction in the water content of a food during the production of a flour may make it more nearly possible to use the food as a major dietary source of calories and protein. For example, it would take almost 7 lb (3.14 kg) of boiled potatoes to furnish the recommended daily per capita allowance of 2,385 Calories (kcal) established by WHO and FAO of the UN, whereas only 1 1/2 lb (0.68 kg) of potato flour would be required. Hence, there is much current interest in the utilization of various vegetable flours for feeding people in the developing countries. [Pg.368]
