Was 1 prepared for the Nobel Prize 1 probably was, because over the years friends and colleagues had hinted that 1 had been nominated many times (of course, nobody really knows anything about the selection in advance). It is frequently said that the Nobel Prize represents the de facto end of the active research career of the recipients as they become public figures with little time left for scholarly work. Plasmids can be introduced into ceUs by several methods. The most common method is transformation, where the recipient ceUs are made competent to receive DNA by washing with a solution of or other inorganic ions. Then the naked DNA is added direcdy a fraction of the ceUs take... 

Although there is no rehable method as of this writing for induction of Ag-speciftc unresponsiveness, some degree of tolerance has been observed by use of nonspecific immunosuppressive therapy. This conclusion is supported by a decrease in the frequency of precursor T-ceUs reactive with graft HLA Ags in long-term recipients of organ transplants. 

Impla.nta.ble Ports. The safest method of accessing the vascular system is by means of a vascular access device (VAD) or port. Older VAD designs protmded through the skin. The totally implanted ports are designed for convenience, near absence of infection, and ease of implantation. Ports allow dmgs and fluids to be deUvered directiy into the bloodstream without repeated insertion of needles into a vein. The primary recipients of totally implanted ports are patients receiving chemotherapy, bolus infusions of vesicants, parenteral nutrition, antibiotics, analgesics, and acquired immune disease syndrome (AIDS) medications. 

Method Transfer. Method transfer involves the implementation of a method developed at another laboratory. Typically the method is prepared in an analytical R D department and then transferred to quahty control at the plant. Method transfer demonstrates that the test method, as mn at the plant, provides results equivalent to that reported in R D. A vaUdated method containing documentation eases the transfer process by providing the recipient lab with detailed method instmctions, accuracy and precision, limits of detection, quantitation, and linearity. 

Acyclovir is more effective the more serious the disease and the earher it is given. It has been shown to be efficacious when used systemicaHy in the prophylaxis of HSV infections in immunosuppressed patients, ie, bone marrow transplant recipients (67). Acyclovir therapy appears to be superior to ara-A in the treatment of herpes simplex encephaUtis in humans (68). 

Purification. Hemoglobin is provided by the red blood ceU in highly purified form. However, the red ceU contains many enzymes and other proteins, and red ceU membranes contain many components that could potentially cause toxicity problems. Furthermore, plasma proteins and other components could cause toxic reactions in recipients of hemoglobin preparations. The chemical modification reactions discussed herein are not specific for hemoglobin and may modify other proteins as well. Indeed, multifimctional reagents could actually couple hemoglobin to nonhemoglobin proteins.

Chymopapain [9001 -90-6] derived from the latex of the papaya tree, produces improvement in lower back pain and sciatica in the majority (75%) of recipients (185—189) when injected into the lumbar intervertebral disks of patients suffering from herniated disk (the nucleus pulposus). This treatment degrades the proteoglycans of the diseased nucleus pulposus, resulting in shrinkage of the disk and reduction of pressure on the nerve roots (190). 

A recent review of research on phosphorus input to surface waters from agriculture highlights the variability of particulate and dissolved phosphorus contributions to catchments. The input varies with rainfall, fertilizer application rates, the history of the application of the fertilizer, land use, soil type, and between surface and sub-surface water. The balance struck between export of nutrients from the catchment and recipient-water productivity is the primary factor which controls its quality. 

This fusogenic activity of influenza hemagglutinin is frequently exploited in the laboratory. If, for example, the virus is bound to cells at a temperature too low for endocytosis and then the pH of the external medium is lowered, the hemagglutinin causes direct fusion of the viral envelope with the plasma membrane infection is achieved without endocytosis. Similarly, artificial vesicles with hemagglutinin in their membrane and other molecules in their lumen can be caused to fuse with cells by first allowing the vesicles to bind to the plasma membrane via the hemagglutinin and then lowering the pH of the medium. In this way the contents of the vesicles are delivered to the recipient cell s cytoplasm.
