Mycophenolate mofetil reduces the risk of first acute rejection by 50%. Toxicity is minor, but includes bone marrow suppression and gastrointestinal complaints. A higher incidence of CMV disease compared to azathioprine control wxs observed in the clinical trials. Recent registry studies appear to indicate that renal transplant recipients receiving mycophenolate have improved long-term outcomes. 

A scientific registry of transplant recipients has been used to determine the effect of cadaveric organ donor treatment with desmopressin on the incidence of pancreas graft thrombosis in clinical pancreas transplantation (70). Of 2804 cases with sufficient information between 5 April 1994 and 27 September 2002, 1287 (46%) had received desmopressin. The mean follow up was 1.5 years (1 month to 8.4 years). There was pancreatic graft thrombosis in 4.3%, of whom 5.1% had received desmopressin and 3.5% had not this was just statistically significant. There was no information about dose, time-course, or duration of desmopressin use. It is not known whether this finding is clinically significant.

I Databases can be linked by computer, e.g. people exposed to a particular product, and people admitted to hospital with a particular problem. Linking a national registry of clozapine recipients to national death records found that clozapine increased the risk of fatal pulmonary embolism and respiratory disorders but reduced the risk of stticide. 

These estimates, however, apply only when the potential recipient is of the same ethnic origin as the potential donors on the registry. Since the majority of potential donors on existing registries are Caucasian, the expectation of finding a matched... 

Even when the potential recipient is of the same ethnic origin as the majority of donors on the registry, the probability of finding a match can extend over a broad spectrum. A potential recipient with a common Caucasian phenotype such as HLA-Al, -A2, -B7, -B8, -DR2, and -DR3 could probably find a match from as few as 500 Caucasian potential donors and would have virtually a 100% chance from a registry of 5000. Conversely, there undoubtedly exist patients with very rare phenotypes who would have difficulty finding a match in a registry of...

The number of patients who suffer from heart-related disease is inereasing rapidly. The American Heart Association estimates that about 800,000 American deaths were due to heart-related disease in 2006, exceeding casualties eaused by cancer and accidents (AHA 2010). Organ transplant is only a partially effeetive solution because a patient s immune system may reject a transplanted heart, and because the number of heart donations simply cannot satisfy the demand. Aeeording to the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network and Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients, only 2,277 heart donations were made in the US in 2006 (HHS 2008, 2010).

In the recent ISHLT registry report, the one-, three-, and five-year prevalence rates of OB in adult lung transplant recipients (LTRs) followed-up between April 1994 and June 2005 were 10%, 30%, and 44%, respectively (1), whereas the one-, three- and five-year mortality rates from BOS were 5%, 26%, and 29%, respectively (1). OB/BOS is the single most important factor responsible for late mortality after lung transplantation, and affects 33% of LTRs who survive more than five years (1).
