REARVIEW MIRROR

Automotive quality, Japanese, 21 171 Automotive rearview mirrors,... [Pg.80]

Several other organic systems have been stndied as potential electrochromes because of their redox behaviour. These include carbazoles, methoxybiphenyls, fluorenones, benzoquinones, naphthaquinones and anthraqninones, tetracyanoquinodimethane, tetrathiafnlvalene and pyrazolines. ° Of particnlar interest are the 1,4-phenylenedi-amines, which form highly colonred species on oxidation. These, known as Wurster s salts, exemplified by Wnrster s Bine (1.97), are anodically colouring and this type of material has found nse in composite electrochromic systems for car rearview mirrors (see 1.5.4.1). [Pg.61]

The detection limit for TLV has been improved substantially by using differential pulse and square-wave voltammetry (Chap. 5). For example, detection limits in the 10 8 M range and below have been demonstrated in thin-layer cells requiring less than 100 /xL of sample [61,62]. One practical application of twin-electrode thin-layer cells is in the automatic electrochromic rearview mirror for automobiles. A cell with optically transparent electrodes is placed in front of a mirrored surface. At night, electrolysis in the cell to generate colored material can rapidly reduce glare from following vehicles. [Pg.110]

Each year, thousands of individuals are killed or seriously injured in automobile accidents. Perhaps most serious is the front-end collision. The car decelerates or stops virtually on impact the momentum of the passengers, however, does not stop, and the driver and passengers are thrown forward toward the dashboard and the front window. Suddenly, passive parts of the automobile, such as control knobs, the rearview mirror, the steering wheel, the dashboard, and the windshield, become lethal weapons. [Pg.120]

Cyanoacrylates are not appropriate for the bonding of the steel parts of an automobile, because of the environments that the car will be exposed to. Those environments include such things as rain, variations in temperatnre, exposure to solvents (such as gasoline, oil, and windshield washer solntion), ozone, acid rain, salt spray, and ultraviolet light from the Sun. (A more appropriate adhesive for car parts would be an epoxy-based adhesive.) Another example of a special adhesive would be the one used to attach a new rearview mirror in an antomobile. Because the cured adhesive in this case will be exposed to wide variations in temperature and to an extremely large amonnt of nltraviolet fight from the Snn for prolonged periods of time, an adhesive formnlated specifically for these conditions should be used. [Pg.48]

In automotive industry [2], rearview mirrors are a good application for electrochromic systems. Transport sunroofs also have been manufactured, in particular in Japan. The durability—characterized by the number of oxidation/reduction cycles which can be applied to the material without excessive degradation is in agreement with the automobile mean durability. [Pg.746]

KPIs can be either lagging or leading. A lagging indicator is like a rearview mirror an event has occurred. A leading indicator is one that suggests that an event may occur sometime in the future. [Pg.160]

I (1) For the purposesof 393.11, the term overall width refers to the nominal design dimension of the widest part of the vehicle, exclusive of the signal lamps, marker lamps, outside rearview mirrors, flexible fender extensions, and mud flaps. [Pg.562]

When we first learn to drive, or teach our kids, it s serious business. Turn the off rap music and pay attention. Both hands on the wheel. Know your blind spots. Then we pass the exam, put the rule-book away, and go about the business of becoming habituated — accustomed — to a lifetime of driving. Future lessons we ll likely learn the hard way, with red flashing lights in our rearview mirror, etc. [Pg.12]

Some mixed conductors, i.e. electronic and ionic, into which ions can be rapidly and reversibly inserted can undergo a colour change. This is, for example, the case of the hydrogen bronzes , mentioned earlier in this book. The colour change can be either from transparent to coloured or from one colour to another. This phenomenon, which can be produced electrochemically, is called electrochromism. It is broadly defined as the production of an absorption band in a display material caused by an applied electric field or current. Such a property is currently under intensive study because of its potential use for passive information display glare-free rearview mirrors for automotives " , solar control windows or smart windows " , thermal sensors and projection systems if matrixable. [Pg.551]

These figures show the use of titania film in a car during the winter season rearview mirror (a) covered with snow without titania film and (b) the snow does not deposit on the titania film. [Pg.384]

A design must include safety features for removing hazards. A court found the design of an earth-moving machine defective because it did not have a rearview mirror as a safety feature. A mirror would allow the driver to see a blind area behind the machine when backing up. In the case the court considered a worker who stood in the blind zone. The operator backed over the worker causing injury. The plaintiff recovered damages from the manufacturer because there was no rearview mirror. ... [Pg.67]

Electrochromic device is a generic form of device applications based on PANI. It may include display and optical memory devices, anti-glare car rearview mirrors, sunglasses, protective eyewear for the militaiy use, and smart windows for car and buildings. Recent reports on flexible electrochromic device composed of PANI represents a new area of applications of PANI (12,13). [Pg.61]
