Evacuation implies moving people out of the harm s way to safe locations. It can be disruptive for the evacuees and expensive for the state. It has the potential to create anxiety in the community, and threatens safety and security of assets. But it saves lives and minimizes the need for a very expensive post disaster relief effort. Dependent on the nature of the threat, an alternative could be shelter in place (Queensland Government 2010). [Pg.244]

Authorities could not afford to take this threat lightly Queensland is home to 60% of the Australian beef industry. The Australian government sought urgent and highly secret consultations with the United States and some of its other allies. The threat was ultimately determined to be a hoax perpetrated by a local convict however, the economic implications of such an attack are obvious, and even the Australian authorities concluded that it would have been almost impossible to prevent.22... [Pg.460]

In local government areas in northern Queensland after natural disasters, it is the primary role of EHOs to determine the environmental health risks and priorities from a community perspective and to provide this information to decision makers in a timely manner. [Pg.288]

So in 2011, the Cairns public health unit initiated a project to develop an integrated systematic approach to assessing environmental health issues and priorities after a disaster. Cairns worked with other northern Queensland local governments, indigenous and non-indigenous community agencies, the Red Cross, and the State Health Department [47]. [Pg.288]
