Owner Managers

Business-to-business - mentors with corporate managerial expertise are matched to the needs of owner-managers of small and medium-sized enterprises. Typically, the mentors focus on supporting mentees to enhance clarity and effectiveness in business. 

The industry includes a large proportion of owner-operators, usually made up of one self-employed, year-round worker who hires seasonal help when the number of customers exceeds a few dozen clients. At the other end of the scale are vast franchises employing thousands of people and serving hundreds of thousands of households. In between are any number of small regional firms. For any operation of more than one owner/worker, moreover, the division of labor is spread between owners, managers, sales staff, and technicians (people who spray the chemicals). 

In this latter connection both contractors and owner management play a joint role in ensuring reliability of operation and avoidance of unscheduled shutdowns. Great strides have been made in this area with better design, inspection and safety procedures, and by the use of improved maintenance and operating techniques.

It is crucial that pharmacy managers understand the impact of third-party payers on pharmacies as well as understand and use the decision-analysis tools described in this chapter to evaluate carefully third-party contracts. It also is important that pharmacy managers and owners manage expenses carefully and think creatively about developing new sources of revenue. Third-party payment for prescriptions will continue to be an important issue in pharmacy in the future, and pharmacy managers need to be aware continually of changing reimbursement levels and other third-party issues.

Nevertheless as the research reported in the next section shows, trade union health and safety representatives surveyed in the study commissioned by the HSE (Research International 1997) were considerably better informed about OELs than were enqjloyers.
