Qualitative Reviews

Qualitative reviews are studies base on the generic experience of personnel and do not involve mathematical estimations. Overall these reviews are essentially checklist reviews in which questions or process parameters are used to prompt discussions of the process design and operations and possible accident scenarios. 

Checklist or Worksheet - A standardized listing which identifies common protection features required for typical facilities is compared against the facility design and operation. Risks are expressed by the omission of safety systems or system features. 

Preliminary Hazard Analysis (PHA) - Each hazard is identified with potiential causes and effects. Recommendations or known protective measures are listed. 

What-If Reviews - A safety study which by which What-If investigative questions (brainstorming approach) are asked by an experienced team of a hydrocarbon system or components under examination. Risks are normally expressed in a qualitative numerical series (e.g., 1 to 5).

Recovery trends at pH 7 appear to follow those measured at pH 3. Acetophenone shows the most significant pH effect. More pH 7 data would be needed for a statistical comparison. A qualitative review of the data indicates that pH 3 and pH 7 extraction recoveries are not substantially different for batch LLE or for CLLE. The current standard CLLE procedure specifies pH 3 to control biological growth. 

Any and all reviews should take an orderly, systematic approach. Also it may be sufficient for a general qualitative review, except for some sophisticated portions of the proposed modification. The review team should be responsible for determining deficiencies, but not defining solutions. Lees [17] notes many selected references to help evaluate processes.

A thorough, qualitative review of potential hazards for construction work activities that should include a list of all hazards, their assessment (considering severity and probability), and corrective actions to mitigate or prevent worker injuries or illness, and is prepared prior to work activities.

Because electron micrographs and glass transition studies as such cannot prove interpenetration, some modeling of the data is necessary to arrive at a coherent picture. In Romania, a qualitative review of the Guaranteed Minimum Income Program (Birks Sinclair C Associates 2004) finds little evidence of an adverse impact on labor force participation. Two design elements are suspected to have mitigated the work disincentives. One is the work requirements applied to all able-bodied beneficiaries. The other is an exit threshold that is set higher than the eligibility threshold. The evaluator considered that because there is a small bonus for employment, there may be a small positive impact on participation compared with more traditional systems of aid (Birks Sinclair Associates 2004, p. 27).
