Qualified expression

Pople fully agreed that it should always be an objective in computational work to indicate experimental errors. He envisioned an ideal relationship between experimental and computational work in which any chemist could use computations. He was not shy in admitting that he, more than anybody else, was responsible for transforming chemistry and making it a computational science, as far as electronic structure was concerned (he added this qualifying expression). Our conversation was recorded three years before his Nobel Prize. 

The same enumeration literal can appear in more than one type declaration. In such cases it may be necessary to clarify the e being used in a particular context. A qualified expression can be used for this purpose. 

Solving the problems of ambiguities such as this in VHDL and using qualified expressions is discussed in Box 6.9.

These are the characteristics which need to be specified and their achievement controlled, assured, improved, managed, and demonstrated. These are the characteristics which form the subject matter of the specified requirements referred to in ISO 9000. When the value of these characteristics is quantified or qualified they are termed quality requirements or requirements for quality. ISO 8402 1994 defines requirements for quality as an expression of the needs or their translation into a set of quantitatively or qualitatively stated requirements for the characteristics of an entity to enable its realization and examination. While rather verbose, this definition removes the confusion over quality requirements and technical requirements. (An additional definition is provided in Appendix A.) Technical requirements for a product or service are quality requirements. The requirements of ISO 9000 are quality system requirements. 

Nevertheless, the response of water resources will be more complex, as human activities will also change in response to altered climates. The intensity of the pressure put on water resources and aquatic ecosystems by external drivers is related to higher economic income (e.g. expressed by electricity production and consumption) of human societies [5]. Like sulforaphane, however, PEITC-NAC (N-acetylcysteine) conjugate appears to block in Gl. Studies by Lund et al. show that in the case of the colorectal cell line HT29, which lacks wild type p53, treatment with AITC causes the cells to detach from the substratum but, at least in the short-term, they do not then enter apoptosis . Where it does occur, induction of apoptosis by isothiocyanate appears to be a p53-dependent process. However, this statement must also be qualified, because the effect appears to depend on which metabolite is considered. For example, sulforaphane does appear to be able to induce apoptosis in HT29 cells, which express a mutated form of the protein.

An invariant captures a consistency rule about a required relationship between attributes. For example, at the business level, an instructor should never be assigned to a course unless qualified. For a given implementation, this means that certain combinations of stored data should never occur. Toxicologists nowadays take a broad view of developmental toxicity they consider not only structural but also functional abnormalities to qualify as adverse, as long as they were produced as a result of exposures incurred in utero. Thus, for example, the developmental effects of chronic alcohol abuse by pregnant women, known as fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), are characterized not only by the presence of certain craniofacial abnormalities, but also by a variety of disabilities such as shortened attention span, speech disorders, and restlessness. Although fully expressed physical deformities included in FAS are associated with heavy drinking, debate continues on the level of alcohol consumption, if any, that is without these more subtle effects on behavior. 

Of the two kinds of numerical prefix (see Table 4.2), the simple di-, tri-, tetra-, etc. are generally recommended. The prefixes bis-, tris-, tetrakis-, etc. are to be used only with more complex expressions and to avoid ambiguity. They normally require parentheses around the name they qualify. The nesting order of enclosing marks is as cited on p. 13. There is normally no elision in instances such as tetraammine and the two adjacent letters a are pronounced separately. 

Identification of patients who would not have otherwise qualified by virtue of a novel test, as has been the case for the use of imatinib in gastrointestinal stromal tumors that express a mutated KIT receptor, and increased treatment duration and compliance linked to prolongation of survival or efficacy in the adjuvant setting. In the final analysis, a significant clinical benefit can be expected to lead to higher adoption rates. 

Intermediate Precision. Intermediate precision expresses within-laboratory variation and is generally performed on different days using different analysts, equipment, and sample preparations. This test may not be applicable if the laboratory has only one workstation. Additionally, this test may not be appropriate for automated workstations that are operating under the same environment and controls within a laboratory. This assumption is made on the basis that the automated workstations are identical (i.e., same configuration, same software and hardware) and that they have been suitably qualified and maintained to a consistent standard and operate under a similar climatic environment. The influence of the analyst is reduced to the preparation of solvents, and this should be covered by the robustness studies. 

Crudely, but adequately for now, we may state rule governing which cycloadditions can take place and which not. A thermal pericyclic cycloaddition is allowed if the total number of electrons involved can be expressed in the form (4n+2), where n is an integer. If the total number of electrons can be expressed in the form 4n it is forbidden. Another way of saying the same thing is that reactions with an odd number of curly arrows are allowed and those with an even number are forbidden. This rule needs to be qualified, as we shall see shortly, and in due course in Chapter 3 made more precise, along with the rules for all the other kinds of pericyclic reaction, in one all-encompassing rule. For now, we need to introduce the rule for photochemical pericyclic cycloadditions.
