In an extensive study undertaken in Nigeria of several patients suffering from pulmonary tuberculosis diagnosed by means of the radiological features of tuberculous bronchopneumonia on chest X-ray and detection of acid-fast bacilli in the patients sputum by simple microscopy, serum immunoglobulin measurements were made (M27). The wide age distribution of the patients and controls are summarized in Table 12, and the immunoglobulin concentration results in Tables 13 and 14. The tuber-... [Pg.197]

JS, a 46-year-old male patient, returned from India with cough, malaise, weight loss and night sweats. Sputum culture showed acid-fast bacilli and 3 days later Mycobacterium tuberculosis was isolated. [Pg.342]

Comprehensive reviews of the earlier investigations have been published by Cornet and by Wells, Dewitt and Long. A recent review of the composition of tuberculin and the proteins of acid-fast bacilli has been published by Seibert. Andersonhas summarized the chemical knowledge of the lipids of M. tuberculosis. [Pg.312]

Anderson found that a substance of lipid nature was associated with the skeletal material of acid-fast bacilli. This lipid was not removed by neutral organic solvents but could be extracted with an ethereal or chloroform solution of hydrogen chloride. Saponification of these firmly-bound lipids yielded a polysaccharide having properties similar to those of the polysaccharide obtained from the purified wax. Phthiocerol was not detected. The polysaccharide was shown to contain... [Pg.328]

The autopsy confirmed the diagnoses and showed acid-fast bacilli in the adventitia of the basilar artery the paralysis of the oculomotor nerve was caused by the brain lesion. Defective function of macrophages was suggested as the possible cause of the underlying immunological abnormality (81). [Pg.402]

The standard methods for detection of MTb include acid-fast bacilli (AFB) smear and conventional and liquid culture methods. The AFB smear is rapid, but has a poor sensitivity of 20% to 80%. Another challenge with the AFB smear is that it cannot distinguish MTb from nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM), such as M. avium-complex (MAC). This distinction is important because disseminated MAC and MTb are both common infections in persons with AIDS. Culture methods for the detection of MTb are sensitive, but growth detectable by standard methods may require 6 to 8 weeks in a culture. Growth often occurs more quickly in liquid culture than with conventional methods, but can still require weeks. With these limitations of culture methods, there was great enthusiasm for nucleic acid testing as a rapid, sensitive method for detection of MTb, especially given the needs to rapidly isolate patients with active, untreated disease and to initiate prompt therapy, particularly in immunocompromised hosts. [Pg.1575]
