The source of corrosion costs varies considerably from one industry to another. Replacement of equipment accounts for corrosion costs in wholesale and retail sections in the livestock sector. In the case of industrial chemicals, the largest part of total corrosion costs is because of inhibitors/water treatment and maintenance and repair. In the case of public utility construction, the largest portion of total corrosion cost is because of inputs such as corrosion-resistant materials, cathodic protection, and coatings. [Pg.106]

In 2011, The CaUfomia Public Utility Commission (CPUC) became the first state commission to promulgate regulations on the privacy and security of consumer usage data that the Center for Democracy and Technology describes as a remarkable achievement that merits the attention of not only utility commissions in other states but also of stakeholders in other sectors, for it shows that a comprehensive privacy and data security framework can be crafted that supports both technology innovation and consumer protection (Dempsey 2011). [Pg.296]

Corporate bonds, as the name indicates, are issued by corporations. Corporate bond values often track the health of the company that issued them even more than they are affected by movements in interest rates. Investors in corporate bonds often evaluate balance sheets, products, management, competitive environment, and even the company s stock performance. There are four different corporate market sectors industrials (cyclicals), airlines/transportation, public utilities, and banking/finance. Maturities fall into four categories short term (up to 4 years), intermediate term (5-12 years), long term (13-40 years), and "absurd term" (41-100 years). [Pg.13]

Pharmacotherapies contribute greatly to human health and longevity. As such, researchers in the public and private sectors make an enormous investment in drug design and refinement and preclinical and clinical testing. Such efforts often result in a marketed compound that expands the options for the treatment and prevention of human diseases. However, on rare occasions, medications associated with adverse effects - ranging from undesirable to potentially fatal - that greatly reduce or even eliminate their therapeutic utility reach the marketplace. [Pg.143]

The purpose of this book is to investigate public policy issues in pharmaceutical innovation. In Section II we first describe the important characteristics of prescription drugs. We emphasize that these characteristics deviate from the standard conditions in a competitive market. In Section III we discuss the current performance of the pharmaceutical market. In Section IV we investigate market failures that persist in allocating research and development (R D) resources and in the utilization of prescription drugs. In Section V we analyze the policy conflict between the economic and health sectors arising from pharmaceutical innovation. The final section discusses the structure of the book and the major content of the chapters. [Pg.1]

The bulk of global production from aquaculture is utilized direcdy as human food, with public aquaculture playing a minor role in many nations or being absent. Private aquaculture is not only about human food production, however. There is, in some regions, well-developed private sector aquaculture involved in the production of bait and ornamental fishes and invertebrates. [Pg.12]

The acceptance of new technology requires that confidence in system reliability must be built through the intense large-scale testing of promising flue gas treatment systems. Such large-scale testing must be undertaken by both the public and private sectors at both utility and industrial boiler sites. The results of these tests must then be disseminated rapidly by all available means to utility companies, boiler manufacturers, and flue gas treatment process vendors. Responsibility for this research should be shared by all concerned. [Pg.162]
