NRC has issued an assessment of potential doses to the public associated with the distribution, use, and disposal of exempt products or materials containing low levels of source or byproduct material (Schneider et al., 2001) (see Section 4.1.2.5.2). In a case involving disposal of large volumes of zircon sand produced in processing of zirconium-bearing minerals, the estimated annual dose to a future on-site resident at a disposal site was 100 p.Sv, due to the elevated levels of thorium and uranium. In all other cases, however, the estimated annual dose was substantially less than 10 xSv. Since the volumes of exempt material were large in many cases, this analysis indicates that substantial volumes of waste that contains low levels of radionuclides are potentially exemptible. 

What Does the Public Associate with the Chemical Industry ... 

Mrs Besant s conversion attracted enormous publicity. She was by far H.P.B. s most spectacular recruit, the more so since for many years she had been publicly associated with Charles Bradlaugh s National Secular Society, which preached agnosticism and birth control. It must be emphasized that Mrs Besant was a very public figure. Burrows was hardly known outside radical circles.

Noncompliance creates a ripple effect far beyond the risks associated with civil or criminal prosecution. Insurance companies and potential investors may consider the company with a poor compliance history to be a poor business or investment risk. Employee recruitment and retention can be jeopardized. Public acceptance of the products that eventually are brought to market may be compromised by the bad publicity associated with noncompliance. Most important, drug development can be delayed or derailed as new products are prohibited from being brought to market. 

For many years, the role of packaging has been low-profile and rarely understood by the general public who, other than at the point of sale, have considered it almost invisible. However, the increasing publicity associated with environmental issues had tended to identify packaging as environmentally unfriendly. This masked the more important and essential roles of the pack, i.e. its influence on product shelf life and the protection it provides against the various hazards which might cause the product to deteriorate.

NMR has become an important tool in medical diagnosis because it allows physicians to probe internal organs and structures without invasive surgical methods or the harmful ionizing radiation of X-rays. When NMR was first introduced into clinical practice in 1981, the selection of an appropriate name was a matter of some debate. Because some members of the public associate nuclear processes with harmful radiation, the N was dropped from the medical application of NMR, now known as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The Industrial and Engineering Chemistry ]o xmdX was established in 1909, and in 1923 the News Edition of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry was started. Bunyan s works, like those of other Puritan authors, are hence to be read as oppositional texts produced at considerable risk to all involved. Nonconformist publishing was a collaborative enterprise requiring from printers, booksellers and other tradesmen a shared commitment with the author to challenge and outwit the agents of the state. Over the last ten years a number of techniques, classified under the general sulqect of Artificial Intel ence (AI), have become of interest for the rapid development of control and advisory systems. This is particularly the case where the s tems are intended for use in new areas of application, or where the problem model is not well understocxl. Several publications associated with the project CESAR, see e.g. [3] and [4], discuss the use of contracts with respect to requirements engineering and safety standards, including ISO 26262, in general. In [5], this connection is elaborated on and a few examples (although not automotive) are shown where contracts could in fact be useful with respect to ISO 26262. However, none of [3], [4] nor [5] apply the theory on a real industrial system and mainly hypothesize about its usefulness when developing safety-critical systems. In this paper, we go in to further depths, showing an explicit use of contracts with respect to ISO 26262 by characterizing safety requirements as contracts for an industrial application example, namely the Fuel Level Display (FLD)-system, present on all heavy trucks from the manufacturer Scania.
