Prototype program

The standard requires the supplier to have a prototype program when required by the customer and to use the same subcontractors, tooling, and processes as will be used in production. 

There will be situations where the customer requires a prototype program but when no such requirement has been stated it does not mean you should not produce prototypes. Prototypes will not normally be required when the design is similar to a previously proven design or standard or the design is so simple that sufficient evidence can be obtained during the production trial run. 

The investigation into the sabotage of Pan Am Flight 103, which left 269 dead, indicated that the explosive used was Semtex H, a plasticized mixture of hexahydro-l,3,5-trinitro-s-triazine and pentaerythritol tetranitrate, and that the amount used was half the quantity that the fledgling technique of Thermal Neutron Analysis (TNA) was designed to detect. Although the placement of the explosive device was fortuitous (from the terrorists point of view) and the suitcase had not been screened by TNA, this event killed the TNA prototype program.

In the following sections we describe a prototype program, REACT, which is currently being, tested on a number of industrial problems.

Other tests may include consumer acceptance tests to determine what instructions in proper use are required, tests for potential safety hazards, electrical tests, self-extinguishing tests, and any others that the product requires. In the case of high risk products, the test program is continued even after the product enters service. 

This decade also saw the first major developments in molecular graphics. The first multiple-access computer was built at MIT (the so-called project MAC), which was a prototype for the development of modern computing. This device included a high-performance oscilloscope on which programs could draw vectors very rapidly and a closely coupled trackball with which the user could interact with the representation on the screen. Using this equipment, Levinthal and his team developed the first molecular graphics system, and his article in Scientific American [25] remains a classic in the field and laid the foundations for many of the features that characterize modern day molecular graphics systems.

Prototype CBR application has been implemented on MS -Excel spreadsheet. The program has been organized on several sheets. A database of cases was created which consists of accident cases collected from literature (e.g. Lees (1996) and Loss Prevention Bulletin) and of design recommendations. Solectria even had government contracts from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and won a bid to build a lightweight Sunrise EV. But, just as Solectria was looking for a partner, the auto companies own electric programs were being launched. Major automakers had their own designs in cars like the GM EV1. The Sunrise did not make it into production and only a few prototypes were built. Solectria did go on to build the Force EV, which is a converted Chevrolet Metro and the company was involved in the GM CitiVan, which was an urban delivery vehicle. 

The ten-year plan was to produce low-emission, 80-per-gallon family cars. The first designs appeared as working models in 2000. There was a timetable calling for production-ready prototypes, but the program was not binding. 

The Ford Ecostar van program was launched in 1993 in response to the announcement of GM s EV1. Ford also started building fuel cell prototypes, but they were not really road-ready vehicles.
