The value of pigments results from their physical—optical properties. These ate primarily deterrniaed by the pigments physical characteristics (crystal stmcture, particle size and distribution, particle shape, agglomeration, etc) and chemical properties (chemical composition, purity, stabiUty, etc). The two most important physical—optical assets of pigments are the abiUty to color the environment in which they ate dispersed and to make it opaque. [Pg.4]

Materials shall be elearly identified in the proposal with their applieable industry standard numbers, including the material grade (see Appendix H). When no such designation is available, the vendor s material specification giving physical properties, chemical composition, and test requirements shall be included in the proposal. [Pg.39]

The treatment costs for the GHEA Associates process depend on the soil matrix, properties, chemical composition of the contaminants, and other site-specific factors. The commercial-scale, integrated process, consists of the extraction and wash liquor purification steps. The estimated costs for the process range from 50 to 80 per ton of soil treated. Other separation processes have estimated treatment costs ranging from 90 to 200 per ton (D13377H, pp. 793, 799). [Pg.628]

Although the release of large numbers of these highly chemically enriched particles may have profound health and environmental consequences, the published literature contains virtually no data characterizing the distribution, physical properties, chemical composition, and source terms of a broad range of important primary pollutants emitted in submicrometer particles. [Pg.174]

This chapter describes the results of an ongoing study we are conducting into the nanoscale mechanical properties, chemical composition and structure of healthy enamel, carious lesions and the acquired salivary pellicle layer. A variety of material characterization techniques are being used, including nanoindentation, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron microprobe analysis (EMPA), scanning acoustic microscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy (TOF SIMS). [Pg.106]

Despite the good product properties (chemical composition >99%, e.e. >98%) the best strain from a huge collection had to be further developed. Starting with classical mutation techniques, the space time yield could be improved from 0.5 g L d to 7.0 g L d and the substrate/product tolerance could be increased to 100 g/L. It took several years to increase the product titer from 1-5 g/L to 120 g/L after muta-... [Pg.96]

All this diversity does not primarily come from nature. Although zeohtes exist as minerals and have been known for more than 150 years, natural zeolites cover only a small fraction of the structures, properties, chemical compositions and applications that zeolite scientists have been able to confer on their synthetic zeolites during chiefly around half a century of efforts. Undoubtedly, these efforts have been inspired by the knowledge of natural zeolites and promoted by the early success of synthetic zeolites in the petrochemical industry, but later on also by the challenge and fun of discovering new zeolite structures, compositions, properties and applications. [Pg.266]

Experiment has shown that the electronic conduction of the VOC sensing metal nanoparticle films is also dependant on the metal core size itself and how the nanoparticles are linked to other polymer molecules (Leibowitz et al. 1999 Zheng et al. 2000 Han et al. 2001) (see Fig. 4,7). Brust et al. (1994) studied electronic transport properties, chemical composition, and the vapor sensitivity of l,n-alkylenedithiol interlinked gold nanoparticles films as a function of alkylene chain length and... [Pg.80]

Ion beam-based treatments typically involve addition (the implanted ions), removal (sputtering) and in some cases change (formation of new compounds) of the target material at its outermost surface. As a consequence, ion implantation treatments induce a change in the structure and nanotopograpy of the treated surface, in the physical properties, chemical composition, and overall in its biological properties. " Ion implantation is used in semiconductor device fabrication, metal finishing, and materials science research as well as the biomedical applications presented later. [Pg.354]

However, the physical properties, chemical composition and mineralogy of the fly ash largely influence its conversion to zeolites, and their resulting grade and overall characteristics. Further, the formation of one or more combination of zeolites mainly depends on the available contents of silica and alumina in amorphous glass form. [Pg.5]

It was demonstrated by Pauschitz et al. [21,23,24,79] that the nature of the glazed layers formed exhibits a variety of characteristics. Wearing conditions, wearing material and mating material govern formation of these layers. These layers determine the friction coefficient and the wear rate. They differ in physical appearance, mechanical properties, chemical compositions and failure mechanisms. Pauschitz etal. found that the following four different situations, were possible ... [Pg.149]
