Professional faculty

As Flemings points out, compared with the middle of the twentieth century, MSE departments now have to prepare their students for quite different professional lives. The key question that seems to arise from these figures is Do university departments put too much emphasis on research And yet, before we conclude that they do, we must remember that it is widely agreed that research is what keeps university faculty alert and able to teach in an up-to-date way. It may well be that what students currently want, and what the health and progress of MSE demands, are two distinct things.

Projection into the future is of course the goal of all professional education, and we at least mention the microelectronic, food, pharmaceutical, ceramic, and environmental businesses which may be major employers of chemical engineering students. The notion of evolution of technology fi om the past to the future seems to be a way to get students to begin thinking about their future without faculty simply projecting our prejudices of how the markets -will change.

Margarete studied pharmacy at the Faculty of Natural Sciences, University of Vienna, from 1995 to 2001. In her master thesis she engaged in the synthesis of cytostatic drugs. After graduation, she underwent professional training to be pharmacist. In addition to working at a pharmacy, she studies at the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration. 

Ultimately, the integration of research and education is a community responsibility that can benefit from broad participation of faculty and co-workers at a variety of stages of professional development. With its broad and fundamental sweep, physical chemistry is an excellent platform for such an effort. The inclusion of examples from other disciplines and multidisciplinary fields like nanotechnology can enrich the physical chemistry curriculum and keep it perennially fresh and exciting for both instructors and students.

It was a requirement of the graduate program in Chemistry at Iowa State that all new students should discuss research projects with several faculty members before selecting a thesis advisor. My conversation with Dr. French quickly convinced me that he would be ideal as a thesis advisor. He was articulate, and thorough in the presentation of his research projects he was very enthusiastic about his research and he was most optimistic that many discoveries would be made. The decision to study with Dr. French was a good one, and led to many years of a rewarding professional association. 

In 1960, the Mayers moved to the University of California at San Diego, where both could finally hold full professorships, his in chemistry and hers in physics. But shortly after arrival, Maria suffered a stroke and was troubled thereafter by poor health, succumbing finally (after a prolonged coma) in 1972. While continuing collaborative theoretical chemistry studies, Joseph Mayer helped to build the newly formed UCSD chemistry faculty to national prominence. He retired and remarried, then accepted a term of presidency of the American Physical Society (1973) and continued other professional activities until his death in 1983. 

Some institutions use faculty committees to vet inventions and progress, which is very inefficient and unproductive. Decisions about projects should be made by professionals who invest funds and seek a return from those investments. One of the characteristic differences in the evaluation process of these projects is that unlike general grants the evaluating panels argue from the private-sector perspective and will simply terminate a project when milestones have not been made.
