Jared L. Anderson obtained his BS in 2000 at South Dakota State University and his PhD in analytical chemistry at Iowa State University in 2005. In August 2005, he joined the faculty at the University of Toledo (Ohio) as an assistant professor. In 2008, he was awarded a Faculty Early CAREER Award by the National Science Foundation. In the same year, he was awarded the Evangelos Theodosious Sigma Xi Young Faculty Research Award at the University of Toledo. His research interests include the use of ionic liquids in all aspects of separation science including analytical extractions, purification, and chromatography.

Intramural funding is monies mobilized, identified, and deployed by an institution for a specific purpose. It is the most significant type of funding within the institution s control. Therefore, I will spend most of the talk on this intramural funding. What is it about intramural research programs that makes them important and successful They increase an institution s ability to leverage itself into more competitive positions, to more successfully gamer federal research support, and to more successfully interact with corporate entities outside the university. Therefore, the way the institution mobilizes its own flexible internal resources to support faculty research is a decision made very carefully.

Ken s research has been recognized by many major awards. Among these some of the most significant are an Alexander von Humboldt U.S. Senior Scientist Award from Germany, the Schrodinger Medal of the World Association of Theoretically Oriented Chemists, the UCLA Faculty Research Lectureship, a Cope Scholar Award and the James Flack Norris Award of the American Chemical Society, the Tolman Award of the Southern California Section of the American Chemical Society, and an Honorary Degree ( Dr. honoris causa ) from the University of Essen, Germany in 1999. In 2000, he was named a Lady Davis Professor at the Technion in Israel and received a Fellowship from the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science. Last year Ken was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and he has won the 2003 American Chemical Society Award for Computers in Chemical and Pharmaceutical Research. 

Then we have the problem of black students who have been mentored by very humane, relational faculty members, who are also very smart scholars and researchers. Then they are confronted with the more unidimensional type of white faculty researchers. The students say these faculty members are cold and indifferent. Often, when I talk to faculty about these issues, they say, No, we are not cold we are scientific. Trying to help them understand this dimension of climate is very difficult.

Scholarly activity is typically defined by the priorities of the individual institution. Some institutions may accept pedagogical development work as scholarly activity within the parameters of tenure and/or promotion portfolios. Other institutions may only accept results from the more traditionally defined research programs for similar decisions. The practice of green chemistry allows scientists at all types of institutions to further their careers in ways that enhance the mission of their own institutions. The focus of this section is on scholarly work in the development of green educational materials and on the connection between the development of these materials and the professional enhancement of faculty researchers.
