Product service experience

Product Service Experience Service experience (i.e., previous or current usage of the component) may be used to substantiate Development Assurance for previously developed hardware and for COTS components, where change is not introduced within this application. Note that in this context, this is direct product service history evidence, and not colloquial here say evidence. Data from non-airborne applications is not specifically excluded under RTCA/DO-254, although often these applications lack the necessary failure reporting data in order to be able to assess the product service experience. RTCA/DO-254 defines criteria on how to evaluate product service history. It should be noted that this is an onerous process, and many product service history cases do not have sufficient data in order to successfully evaluate product service history. Therefore, the architectural mitigation or advance verification methods must be used. [Pg.272]

Plastics are no different in this respect than other materials. If steel, aluminum, and ceramics were to be made into a different complex shapes and no prior history on their behavior for that processing shape existed, a period of trial and error would be required to ensure their meeting the required measurements. Service Experience is data from previous operational use of the product concerned. Direct Evidence is concerned with analysis of data from Service Experience and what the results of that analysis showed in terms of satisfaction of the safety requirements. Backing Evidence is concerned with showing that the environment from which the data was obtained is sufficiently similar to that to which the re-used product will be subjected, that adequate performance-assessment and fault-recording processes were in place when the product was originally deployed, and that the analysis of the outputs of those processes was adequate and properly carried out. [Pg.118]
