Shaping processes

Two observations relevant to ECM can be made. (/) Because the anode metal dissolves electrochemicaHy, the rate of dissolution (or machining) depends, by Faraday s laws of electrolysis, only on the atomic weight M and valency of the anode material, the current I which is passed, and the time t for which the current passes. The dissolution rate is not infiuenced by hardness (qv) or any other characteristics of the metal. (2) Because only hydrogen gas is evolved at the cathode, the shape of that electrode remains unaltered during the electrolysis. This feature is perhaps the most relevant in the use of ECM as a metal-shaping process (4). 

Sand Casting. Sand casting is the most popular method of molding for cast copper alloys. It is the least expensive near net shape process, and pattern costs are low. Dimensional tolerance capabiUties vary widely and are the least accurate when compared with other methods of casting. 

As manufactured. Material which acquires some temper from shaping processes in which there is no special control over thermal treatment or amount of strain hardening...

High mechanical strength with respect to crushing (e.g. under the weight of the catalyst bed or during the shaping process). 

The main shaping processes used in catalyst manufacture are pelletization, extrusion, and granulation.

If biscuits are made by hand the shaping process would be to roll out the dough and use a cutter to cut the biscuits to shape. The scrap dough is then re-rolled and more pieces are cut with the excess being re-rolled and the process repeated until there is insufficient dough to make any more biscuits. 

The high coefficient of expansion can cause problems with shape stability and dimension tolerances in precision products. Moreover the high expansion causes more shrinkage upon cooling after a shaping process (see e.g. MT 10.3.2).

Choosing the correct flow period is a very important aspect in the forming and shaping process. Mooney cure curves give good data on the flow period. The flow period also depends on the flow distances in the cavities of the mould and the viscosity of the rubber stock and the repeat pressure application cycles, called "bumping" cycles on the shop floor. 

Sintering of powdered metals such as aluminum, beryllium, tungsten, and zinc as well as ceramics under pressure is widely practiced as a shaping process, but that is different from the sintering process described here. 

Forging, as an effective industrial metal-shaping process, made its first appearance during Ihe industrial revolution of the late 18th century, when the first steam-powered hammers were developed. Over the years, laiger forging presses have been developed to replace these earliest tools they have been automated to an impressive extent. 

The particle size distribution affects the shaping processes, green density, the sinterability and the final density. The particles mostly are not single crystallites but contain several crystallites. Therefore, the size measured by XRD is different from that measured by common particle size measurements... 

In screw extruders, as we have seen, the processing takes place in the helical channel formed between the screw and the barrel. In a co-rotating disk processor (CDP), on the other hand, processing takes place in flat doughnut-shaped processing chambers formed by two neighboring disk surfaces, the inner surface of the barrel, the shaft to which the disks are attached, and the channel block attached to the barrel, with very small clearance to the disk surfaces. It thus blocks the channel and separates inlet from outlet, as shown in Fig. 9.44. Processing chambers can be connected in series, parallel, or any other... 

The material costs are composed of the price of the raw material, the dimensions of the product and the unavoidable loss of material in the shaping process.
