Processing shale oil

The TOSCOAL Process. The Oil Shale Corp. (TOSCO) piloted the low temperature carbonization of Wyoming subbituminous coals over a two-year period in its 23 t/d pilot plant at Rocky Falls, Colorado (149). The principal objective was the upgrading of the heating value in order to reduce transportation costs on a heating value basis. Hence, the soHd char product from the process represented 50 wt % of the starting coal but had 80% of its heating value. [Pg.94]

Shale Oil. In the United States, shale oil, or oil derivable from oil shale, represents the largest potential source of Hquid hydrocarbons that can be readily processed to fuel Hquids similar to those derived from natural petroleum. Some countries produce Hquid fuels from oil shale. There is no such industry in the United States although more than 50 companies were producing oil from coal and shale in the United States in 1860 (152,153), and after the oil embargo of 1973 several companies reactivated shale-oil process development programs (154,155). Petroleum supply and price stabiHty has since severely curtailed shale oil development. In addition, complex environmental issues (156) further prohibit demonstration of commercial designs. [Pg.96]

With the beginning of the industrial revolution around 1800, oil became increasingly important for lubrication and better illumination. Expensive vegetable oils were replaced by sperm whale oil [8002-24-2], which soon became scarce and its price skyrocketed. In 1850 lubrication oil was extracted from coal and oil shale (qv) in England, and ultimately about 130 plants in Great Britain and 64 plants in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Kentucky employed this process. [Pg.364]

Temperature and Product Yields. Most oil shale retorting processes are carried out at ca 480°C to maximize liquid product yield. The effect of increasing retort temperature on product type from 480 to 870°C has been studied using an entrained bed retort (17). The oil yield decreased and the retort gas increased with increased retorting temperature the oil became more aromatic as temperature increased, and maximum yields of olefinic gases occurred at about 760°C. Effects of retorting temperatures on a distillate fraction (to 300°C) are given in Table 6. [Pg.347]

Carbonate Decomposition. The carbonate content of Green River oil shale is high (see Table 4). In addition, the northern portion of the Piceance Creek basin contains significant quantities of the carbonate minerals nahcoUte and dawsonite. The decomposition of these minerals is endothermic and occurs at ca 600—750°C for dolomite, 600—900°C for calcite, 350—400°C for dawsonite, and 100—120°C for nahcohte. Kinetics of these reactions have been studied (19). Carbon dioxide, a product of decomposition, dilutes the off-gases produced from retorting processes at the above decomposition temperatures. [Pg.347]

PETROSIX. The PETROSIX technology is operated in the IH mode using hot recycle gas as the heat-transport medium. The PETROSIX retort has only one level of heat input, uses countercurrent flows, and uses a circular grate to control the flow of soflds (Eig. 3). The PETROSIX has been operated by Petrobras (Brazil) since the 1950s and is one of the few retorting processes producing shale oil in 1995. [Pg.348]

In the remote Negev desert region of Israel, oil shale is being burned in a duidized-bed combustor to supply process heat and produce electric power. Unlike the Estonian kukersite, this oil shale is lean, about 63 L/1, but is being mined to access an undedying phosphate deposit (26). [Pg.354]

Water Quality. AH commercial oil shale operations require substantial quantities of water. AH product water is treated for use and operations are permitted as zero-discharge facHities. In the Unocal operation, no accidental releases of surface water have occurred during the last four years of sustained operations from 1986 to 1990. The Unocal Parachute Creek Project compliance monitoring program of ground water, surface water, and process water streams have indicated no adverse water quaHty impacts and no violations of the Colorado Department of Health standards (62). [Pg.355]

As of 1995, there were only a few commercial oil shale faciUties operating in the world. These faciUties are located in countries where the economic, pohtical, and environmental requirements for commercial oil shale development are met. There are commercial oil shale faciUties in Bra2il, China, Estonia, and Israel. No commercial oil shale faciUties have existed in the United States because the costs of shale oil processing exceed those associated with conventional petroleum cmde processing. [Pg.356]

The commercial production of shale oil as an alternative energy source has not been economically feasible. As of 1995, all commercial oil shale operations in the world (Petrobras, Bra2il PAMA, Israel The Chinese Petroleum Corporation, Fushun and Maoming, China KivioH Oil Shale Processing Plant, Kohda-Jarve, Estonia) receive some sort of economic incentives or assistance from the countries in which they are operating. [Pg.356]

Pilot-plant studies have been conducted by Petrobras on many of the different oil shales from around the world. Tests indicate that many oil shales could be processed using the PETROSIX retorting technology (67) (Fig. 12). [Pg.357]

Petroleum refining, also called petroleum processing, is the recovery and/or generation of usable or salable fractions and products from cmde oil, either by distillation or by chemical reaction of the cmde oil constituents under the effects of heat and pressure. Synthetic cmde oil, produced from tar sand (oil sand) bitumen, and heavier oils are also used as feedstocks in some refineries. Heavy oil conversion (1), as practiced in many refineries, does not fall into the category of synthetic fuels (syncmde) production. In terms of Hquid fuels from coal and other carbonaceous feedstocks, such as oil shale (qv), the concept of a synthetic fuels industry has diminished over the past several years as being uneconomical in light of current petroleum prices. [Pg.200]

The term tar sands is a misnomer tar is a product of coal processing. Oil sands is also a misnomer but equivalent to usage of "oil shale." Bituminous sands is more correct bitumen is a naturally occurring asphalt. Asphalt is a product of a refinery operation, usually made from a residuum. Residuum is the nonvolatile portion of petroleum and often further defined as atmospheric (bp > 350° C) or vacuum (bp > 565° C). For convenience, the terms "asphalt" and "bitumen" will be used interchangeably in this article. [Pg.359]

Other large-scale coal pyrolysis process developments were carried out by the Tosco Corp., with its TOSCO AT, process (36). Essentially a direct copy of Tosco s rotating kiln technology that was developed for pyrolysis of oil shale, this slow heating scheme achieved tar yields at maximum temperatures of 482—521°C that were essentially identical to those obtained by a Eischer assay. [Pg.287]

Coal, oil shale, and tar sand are complex carbonaceous raw materials and possible future energy and chemical sources. However, they must undergo lengthy and extensive processing before they yield fuels and chemicals similar to those produced from crude oils (substitute natural gas (SNG) and synthetic crudes from coal, tar sand and oil shale). These materials are discussed briefly at the end of this chapter. [Pg.1]
