Estimation of column costs for preliminary process evaluations requires consideration not only of the basic type of internals but also of their effect on overall system cost. For a distillation system, for example, the overall system can include the vessel (column), attendant structures, supports, and foundations auxiliaries such as reboiler, condenser, feed neater, and control instruments and connecting piping. The choice of internals influences all these costs, but other factors influence them as well. A complete optimization of the system requires a full-process simulation model that can cover all pertinent variables influencing economics. [Pg.85]

The combination of several unit operations into a single piece of equipment can eliminate equipment and simplify a process. There may be inherent safety conflicts resulting from this strategy (see Section 2.4). Combining a number of process operations into a single device increases the complexity of that device, but it also reduces the number of vessels or other pieces of equipment required for the process. After distillation, the hot tarry acidic residue attacked the iron vessel with hydrogen evolution, and an explosion eventually occurred. It was later found that addition of the nitrobenzene to the diluted acid did not give emulsions, while the reversed addition did. Generally offshore facilities and major process plants onshore represent considerable capital investment and have a high number of severe hazards associated with them (blowouts, ship collisions, line and vessel ruptures, etc.). They normally cannot be easily evaluated with a simple safety checklist approach.
