Preservation of the Environment

The basic rule concerning waste disposal is that anything that is shipped or flown in must eventually be shipped out. Accordingly, the amount of material that is brought in must be reduced to the essentials, items that are no longer needed should be re-used if possible, and the rest must be collected for shipment to Conus for recycling and/or safe disposal. The transformation of McMurdo Station from a temporary military supply base to its present squeaky-clean appearance did not happen overnight and required a change in the local culture. However, after the problems were graphically described and condemned in the popular press (e.g., Lemonick 1990) and with prodding from Greenpeace (e.g.. May 1988 Anonymous 1990), the activities of the US Antarctic Program continue to comply with ACA and the rules arising from it.

A comprehensive approach to the quality assurance in NDT would combine both approaches. It creates and maintains conditions for the people protection, safe operation of objects and products and preservation of the environment.

The further development of mankind is impossible without the complex account of social, ecological, technical, economic, legal and international aspects of a problem as applied not only to a concrete production cycle, but also in scales of regions, the countries and all world.

Environmental problems are far more costly to deal with than worker safety and health issues and it is often financially draining to install the technology for pollution prevention. Next in priority is design and construction of works for organophosphorus agent destruction.
