Incomplete ordering

X-ray diffraction methods have been indispensable in the development of the present concept of cellulose structure, but Mark15 has offered the opinion that such methods alone are ill-suited to the quantitative determination of crystalline and non-crystalline fractions. Chemical methods which depend upon the greater reactivity or accessibility of the incompletely ordered regions have offered an alternative approach to the problem. 

Whatever the precursor, the formation of an intermediate solid phase was always observed. It can be inferred from X-ray diffraction (Fig. 9.2.7) and infrared spectroscopy that this intermediate phase shows a lamellar, incompletely ordered structure (turbostratic structure) built up with parallel and equidistant sheets like those involved in the lamellar structure of the well-crystallized hydroxides Ni(OH)2 or Co(OH)2, these sheets are disoriented with intercalation of polyol molecules and partial substitution of hydroxide ions by alkoxy ions (29). The dissolution of this solid phase, which acts as a reservoir for the M(I1) solvated species, controls the concentration of these species and then plays a significant role in the control of the nucleation of the metal particles and therefore of their final morphological characteristics. For instance, starting from cobalt or nickel hydroxide as precursor in ethylene glycol, the reaction proceeds according to the following scheme (8) ...

Our primary focus here is on these questions where partial or incomplete orderings are directly informative to conservation, remediation, or allocation issues of environmental management. Biodiversity and ecosystem health are multifaceted concerns that are most readily and objectively approached through suites of indicators. Prioritization of landscape units in these regards is also intrinsically complex. If a subset of indicators is essentially concordant across all cases of observation, then the indicators in the (sub)set are also substantially redundant. On the other hand, indicators representing largely independent dimensions of biodiversity or ecosystem health will almost necessarily complicate prioritization processes because there will be less consistency in how the respective landscape units reflect... 

When studying amorphous materials and incompletely ordered particles in polycrystals, X-ray diffraction analysis is used to determine the phase composition, size, and orientation of grains (texture). 

K plutonium is indeed antiferromagnetic, the relatively high rq values observed by us may be due to incomplete ordering of the spins, caused by the presence of specific impurities in solid solution. 

There are, however, technological means available to burn incompletely desulfurized fuels at the same time minimizing SO2 emissions. In the auto-desulfurizing AUDE boiler developed by IFF, the effluent is treated in place by an absorbent based on lime and limestone calcium sulfate is obtained. This system enables a gas desulfurization of 80% it requires nevertheless a relatively large amount of solid material, on the order of 200 kg per ton of fuel.

This appendix is a brief and incomplete introduction to software useful computational chemistry for the PC. The order below is approximately the order in which the programs are used in the text. 

Combustion. The burning of soHd, Hquid, and gaseous fuels as a source of energy is very common. Using sufficient and reHable combustion controls, this process seldom causes serious problems. However, some combustion processes are deHberately carried out with an inadequate oxygen supply in order to obtain products of incomplete combustion. Explosive mixtures sometimes occur, and then flashback is a serious problem. 

Air emissions for processes with few controls may be of the order of 30 kilograms lead or zinc per metric ton (kg/t) of lead or zinc produced. The presence of metals in vapor form is dependent on temperature. Leaching processes will generate acid vapors, while refining processes result in products of incomplete combustion (PICs). Emissions of arsine, chlorine, and hydrogen chloride vapors and acid mists are associated with electrorefining. 

It is unclear whether previously published fire risk analyses have adequately ircaicd dependent failures and systems interaetions. Examples of either experienced or postulated system interactions that have been missed include unrelated systems that share common locations and the attendant spatially related physical interactions arising from fire.
