Attempts have been made to perform thermal retorting ia a gas barrier flexible pouch or tray. The retort pouch, under development for many years, has a higher surface-to-volume ratio than a can and employs a heat seal rather than a mechanical closure. Similarly, plastic retort trays have higher surface-to-volume ratios and are usually heat seal closed. Plastic cans iatended for microwave reheating are composed of bodies fabricated from multilayer plastic including a high oxygen barrier material, plus double-seam aluminum closures. 

Cereal Products. Breakfast cereals are susceptible to moisture absorption and require good water-vapor- and fat-barrier packagiag that retains dehcate flavors. Breakfast cereals are packaged in polyolefin coextmsion films in the form of pouches or bags within paperboard carton outer sheUs. 

Hard baked goods such as cookies and crackers have a relatively low water and high fat content. Water can be absorbed, and the product loses its desirable texture and becomes subject to Hpid rancidity. Packagiag for cookies and crackers includes polyolefin-coextmsion film pouches within paperboard carton sheUs, and polystyrene trays overwrapped with polyethylene or oriented polypropylene film. Soft cookies are packaged in high water-vapor-barrier laminations containing aluminum foil. 

Oriented polypropylene film (OPP) may be classified as heat-set and non-heat-set, blown and tentered, coextmded and coated. Orientation improves the cold-temperature resistance and other physical properties. Heat-set biaxially oriented polypropylene film (BOPP) is the most widely used protective packagiag film ia the United States. It is used to wrap bakery products, as lamination pHes for potato and com chips, and for pastas and numerous other flexible pouch and wrapping appHcations. Nonheat-set OPP is used as a sparkling, transparent shrink-film overwrap for cartons of candy. 

Some flexible packaging is fabricated by converters into bags and pouches. Bag material is either small monolayer or large multiwall with paper as a principal substrate. Pouches are small and made from laminations. Bags usually contain a heat-sealed or adhesive-bonded seam mnning the length of the unit and a cross-seam bonded in the same fashion. 

In a variant of the horizontal form/fill/seal operation, the material, moving in a horizontal direction, is folded on itself vertically. Vertical sections of the two faces are heat-sealed to each other to form a pouch, which may then be filled. The pouch, usually made from film or paper bonded to aluminum foil plus a plastic laminant and heat sealant, is closed by a heat seal. This type of pouch gives high moisture and oxygen protection and is used for moisture-and flavor-sensitive condiments and beverage mixes. 

Example of an HACCP System. The HACCP system can be used to ensure production of a safe cooked, sHced turkey breast with gravy, which has been vacuum packaged in a flexible plastic pouch and subjected to a final heat treatment prior to distribution (37). Raw turkey breasts are trimmed, then injected with a solution containing sodium chloride and sodium phosphate. Next, the meat is placed into a tumbler. After tumbling, the meat is stuffed into a casing, placed onto racks, and moved into a cook tank, where it is cooked to an internal temperature of at least 71.1°C (160°F). After... 

Procedures for trapping accelerant vapors in the headspace of a closed container on charcoal that is either encased in a porous pouch or impregnated into a flexible membrane have been described (124). Trace amounts of explosive compounds can be trapped from hplc effluents onto a porous polymer microcolumn for confirmatory gc examination (125). 

Inert gas flush packing in plastic-laminated pouches, although less effective than vacuum packing, can remove or displace 80—90% of the oxygen in the package. These packages offer satisfactory shelf life and are sold primarily to institutions.

Shipping cartons for hquids in cans and bottles, bulk solids in jars, pouches, and folding boxes, and briquetted items with or without individual packaging are usually made or corrugated kraft paper. The most common styles are the regular slotted caiton (RSC), the end-opening RSC, and the center special-full overlap slotted container (SFF). End joints may be stapled, stitched, glued, or taped.
