West Development Group

An environmentally friendly commercial roofing system has been commercially developed by West Development Group [67]. The roof comprises a soy-based spray polyurethane (PU) foam with a sprayable solvent-free silicone top coat containing recycled EPDM granules forming a water-resistant, seamless, self-flashing seal. 

The research groups of Mariano and West developed a photoinduced electrocydi-zation/nucleophilic addition sequence. Thus, irradiation of N-alkylpyridinium perchlorates as 5-19 in an aqueous solution led to the aziridine cations 5-20, which react in a nucleophilic addition with OH to give the isolable azabicyclo[3.1.0]hex-2-enols 5-21. These can be further transformed by a nucleophilic ring-opening of the aziridine moiety under acidic conditions to lead to useful unsymmetrically trans,trans-trisubstituted cyclopentenes 5-22 (Scheme 5.5) [10]. 

The intramolecular 4+3 cycloaddition reactions of cyclopentenyl oxyallylic cations have been studied and developed in our laboratory for quite some time. Our group appreciates the power of cyclic oxyallylic cations such as 31 that allow us to perform a 4+3 cycloaddition reaction to create a product that is a formal 4+(3+m) cycloadduct (32) (Scheme 10). So does Fred West s group. 

LLNL and Far West Group, Inc., signed a licensing agreement in lanuary 1997 to commercialize the CA-CDI process. CDI Technologies Partnership was created in November 1997 as an independent entity to develop and patent practical implementations of the basic technology. The technology is not yet commercially available for remediation applications. 

Based on the previous work of this group on the three-component aza[4+2]/ allylboration strategy to construct polysubstituted piperidines [62], Gao and Hall developed a catalytic enantioselective version [63] of the corresponding oxygeneous process to construct a-hydroxyalkylated pyrans from 3-boronoacrolein [64], This recent variant of a Vaultier-Lallemand one-pot three-component reaction (see Scheme 12.14) was successfully applied to a concise total synthesis of (5R,6S)-6-acetoxy-5-hexadecanolide 128 (Scheme 12.20), the oviposition attractant pheromone of the female Culex mosquito [65] capable of transmitting the West Nile virus.
