Polyurethanes are used in many other applications, which we do not have room to discuss. These applications include paints, varnishes, adhesive binders for chipboard and plywood, hoses, timing belts, athletic tracks and playing surfaces, and the encapsulation of electrical components.

They combine the high strength, oil- and gas-resistance of polyurethanes with the advantage of thermoplastic processability. They are about 15 percent of the total thermoplastic elastomer market, used in auto parts, wire and cable, medical products, and fuel hose. 

Several sections of this chapter discuss building materials (hoses and pipes, pavement, roofing, sealants, siding, and waterproofing). Here, we focus on wall materials and insulation in various extruded and molded profiles. Numerous polymers are used for these two applications. They include polystyrene, phenolic resin, polyvinylchloride, and polyurethanes for insulation purposes and polyvinylchloride, polyurethanes, and polyesters for wall systems and structural elements. The major methods of production include molding, extrusion, and pultrusion. 

The Contractor shall supply separate pumping units, including separate chemical containers, hoses, and all other accessories for injection of polyurethane grout and acrylate grout. 

Du Font s Hytrel copolyester thermoplastic elastomers are slightly higher in price than the polyurethane types and have grown rapidly. They have a wide range of service temperatures and have found major uses in recreational vehicles, belting, hydraulic hose, and mechanical goods.

The majority of all antimicrobial additives are used in flexible PVC. The remaining portion is used in polyurethane foams and other resins. PVC applications using antimicrobials include flooring, garden hose, pool liners, and wall coverings. 

Thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers can be molded and extruded to produce flexible articles. Applications include wire insulation, hose, tracks for all-terrain vehicles, solid tires, roller skate wheels, seals, bushing, convoluted bellows, bearings, and small gears for high-load applications. In the automobile industry thermoplastic polyurethanes are used primarily for exterior parts. Their ability to be painted with flexible polyurethane-based paints without pretreatment is valuable. 

New materials and manufacturing techniques have been used to minimize the problem of drag and friction that occurs with heavy umbilicals. Tufflite, a surface diving umbilical, combines the strength of its rope-like cabled lay-up with kink resistance and neutral buoyancy that allows improved maneuverability and lower drag. Tufflite is based on textile braid reinforced polyurethane (PU) hoses for gas and air supply and has a color-coded outer sheath of abrasion-resistant PU. 

Hoses for offshore applications are in most cases made of abrasion-resistant materials such as poly(vinyl chloride) or polyurethane. Polytetrafluoroethylene hoses have been developed for use as intercormectors to oil or gas combustion chamber burners or turbines. The inert qualities, abflity to withstand the hostile environment, and high-pressure capability suit them to this application.

Polyurethanes are mostly thermosetting polymers [9]. They are used to make foam products (example seats), wheels, tires, hoses, synthetic fibers, etc. and for surface coatings and sealants. Also their foams have some resistance to the damaging effects of visible light.
