Polyurethane raw materials

The most important general test methods are issued as ASTM Test Methods and are periodically updated by the Polyurethane Raw Materials Analysis Committee (PURMAC) of the Society for the Plastics Industry (SPI). PURMAC has collected all pertinent analytical methods in a manual (271).

There has been a group of catalysts developed by polyurethane raw material suppliers with the polyurethane market in mind. Mercury-based catalysts, because of their toxicity, have been banned in some countries or severe restrictions placed on their use. Bismuth-based catalysts are recommended in their place. 

All scales must be kept clean and free from any buildup of polyurethane raw materials. The level and zero must be checked daily. A weight check also must be available in the normal weight range. The scales must be checked annually by a suitably qualified technician. 

This method relies on the fact that the isotopes of certain atoms have electrons that will flip under certain conditions. This change in state can be detected, and how they are connected can be shown. The H and 13C isotopes are able to produce resonance spectra for polyurethane raw materials and cured samples. ASTM method D4273 details a method to determine the primary hydroxyl content of polyether polyols. 

Suppliers of polyurethane raw materials issue MSDSs for all their products as well as data sheets on the individual materials with additional information about the material concerned. This may be important, as in the case of pure MDI, where the storage conditions are vital.

At this point in time in the development of RRIM technology, it is difficult to predict the future market and the resultant impact on the polyurethane raw material market. 

Overall, the polyurethane raw material supply capacity appears to be adequate to meet the needs of an expanded RIM and RRIM market for replacement of steel in automobiles, at least through 1985. Should it become apparent that market demands will outstrip monomeric MDI supply capability in the late 1980 s, then undoubtedly expansions of capacity will be forthcoming.

The most important chain extenders are ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, propylene glycol, 1,4-butanediol, cyclohexanedimethanol, and hyroquinone dihy-droxyethyl ether. Recently, 1,3-propanediol (57) and 1,2,4-butanetriol (58) have become available as new polyurethane raw materials. Since ethylene glycol-extended polyurethanes are prone to thermal degradation, ethylene glycol is only used as a RIM extender in thermoset polyurethanes.
