Electrostatic stability plays a dominant role in many separation processes, such as filtration of industrial wastewaters. Coagulation aids (known as coagulants) are routinely used to improve the effectiveness of separation processes in such cases. Polymer-induced stability is often the method of choice, particularly in the case of concentrated dispersions for example, many pharmaceutical preparations, paints, inks, and liquid toners depend on surfactants or polymer additives for ensuring stable preparations. We see in Section 13.2 that in the case of concentrated dispersions both thermodynamic and kinetic issues often become very important. [Pg.576]

Sucrochemistry is already more than 50 years old, and has become a field of carbohydrate chemistry on its own. Indeed, considerable progress has been achieved in the monitoring of the chemical reactivity of sucrose, with the efforts of many research teams who have built on the steps of a few pioneers. Many sucrose derivatives can now be prepared, and sophisticated synthons as well as simple substituted compounds have been reported. However, only a few examples have yet reached the level of the industrial development, and these are mainly in the field of food and cosmetic additives and surfactants. Various polymers, additives for materials, and some chemical intermediates have also been produced. Bioconversions are certainly a major avenue for using sucrose as a starting material, and ethanol production will increase as a consequence of high oil prices. Current awareness of the shortage of fossil resources emphasizes the potential for chemical transformations of sucrose in providing new uses of this abundant natural resource. [Pg.270]

Health issues can be related not only to the pyrolysis products of the polymer itself, but also may be related to the compounds that come from the polymer additives. For example, in a study of pyrolysis of high impact polystyrene with decabromodiphenyi ether/antimony oxide added as a flame retardant, it has been shown that toxic polybrominated dibenzofuranes are generated during thermal decomposition in the range of 350-400° C [15]. [Pg.178]

For all the antioxidants studied, the 266 nm photoionisation mass spectra are dominated by the molecular ion peak very little fragmentation is observed. In contrast, at 193 nm, the molecular ion peak is usually absent from the photoionisation mass spectra. Similar behaviour is exhibited by the UV stabilisers (Tinuvin) in their photoionisation mass spectra. This wavelength-dependent fragmentation can be exploited for unambiguous identification of many polymer additives. For example, it is shown that the isomeric UV stabilisers Tinuvin 320, Tinuvin 343, and Tinuvin 329 can be differentiated on the basis of... [Pg.32]

Within the technologies of polyethylene terephthalate production, this chapter focuses on nonpolymer modifications. That means, that speciality products based on bicomponent systems (combinations with different polymers), and polymer additives (for anti-pilling, antistatic, flame-retardant, antibacterial and heat resistance properties) are not specifically described. [Pg.160]

An example of a results sheet is shown in Figure 6.2. It is displayed to include polymer addition. For three-phase test work, oil analyses would need to be added, and data for two liquid discharge streams also would need to be recorded. The polymer addition would be omitted where none is used, but would be adapted for the use of rinse. Figure 6.2 is shown as a general result sheet to cover as wide a range of applications as possible. Naturally it can be. and is, adapted for special applications such as classification or, say. refining work, when interest, perhaps, will be more in size distributions and chemical analyses, respectively. [Pg.253]

Tailored Polymer Additives for Wax (Paraffin) Crystal Control... [Pg.205]

In conclusion, by means of the SANS micro-structural investigation method the structure and morphology of the crystalline-amorphous polymer-aggregates was resolved (Fig.llb). Of greater importance for further design and optimization of efficient polymer additives for wax crystal control was the understanding of the interaction mechanism between the polymers and waxes in this specific case. This mechanism has found commercial application of PE-PEB (ParaflowTM) as diesel wax modifiers. [Pg.217]
