Polyfluorocarbons

Uses. Besides polymerizing TFE to various types of high PTEE homopolymer, TEE is copolymerized with hexafluoropropylene (29), ethylene (30), perfluorinated ether (31), isobutylene (32), propylene (33), and in some cases it is used as a termonomer (34). It is used to prepare low molecular weight polyfluorocarbons (35) and carbonyl fluoride (36), as well as to form PTEE m situ on metal surfaces (37). Hexafluoropropylene [116-15-4] (38,39), perfluorinated ethers, and other oligomers are prepared from TEE. 

Naphthalene sodium prepared in dimethyl ether or another appropriate solvent, or metallic sodium dissolved in Hquid ammonia or dimethyl sulfoxide, is used to treat polyfluorocarbon and other resins to promote adhesion (138—140). Sodium, usually in dispersed form, is used to desulfurize a variety of hydrocarbon stocks (141). The process is most useful for removal of small amounts of sulfur remaining after hydrodesulfurization.

Polyfluorocarbons are resistant to heat, solvent, and corrosives. The resistance is greatest in the regularly structured PTFE and decreases as the geometry is upset by substitution of other atoms for fluorine. 

Fuel, oxygen, and high temperature are essential for the combustion process. Thus, polyfluorocarbons, phosphazenes, and some composites are flame-resistant because they are not good fuels. Fillers such as alumina trihydrate (ATH) release water when heated and hence reduce the temperature of the combustion process. Compounds such as sodium carbonate, which releases carbon dioxide when heated, shield the reactants from oxygen. Char, formed in some combustion processes, also shields the reactants from a ready source of oxygen and retards the outward diffusion of volatile combustible products. Aromatic polymers, such as PS, tend to char and some phosphorus and boron compounds catalyze char formation aiding in controlling the combustion process. 

The most widely used films are LDPE, cellophane, PET, PVC, cellulose acetate, polyfluorocarbons, nylons, PP, PS, and Saran. The strength of many films is improved by biaxial orientation, stretching. Most of the thermoplastics used as films may also be extruded as... 

Many semicompatible rubbery polymers are added to increase the impact resistance of other polymers, such as PS. Other comminuted resins, such as silicones or polyfluorocarbons, are added to increase the lubricity of other plastics. For example, a hot melt dispersion of polytetrafluoroethylene (ptfe) in polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) is used as a coating for antistick cookware. 

The incorporation of polar groups in unvulcanized polymers reduces their solubility in benzene. Thus the copolymer of acrylonitrile and butadiene (NBR), polychlorobutadiene (Neoprene), and fluorinated EP (the copolymer of ethylene and propylene) are less soluble in benzene and lubricating oils than the previously cited elastomers. Likewise, silicones and phosphazene elastomers, as well as elastomeric polyfluorocarbons, are insoluble in many oils and aromatic hydrocarbons because of their extremely low solubility parameters (silicons 7-8 H polytetrafluoroethylene 6.2 benzene 9.2 toluene 8.9 pine oil P.6). 

Since PVG hdpe, and polyesters are resistant to most nonoxidizing corrosives and are less expensive and more readily processed than the polyfluorocarbons, they may be used in many instances as corrosion-resistant polymers. 

A recent review, along with numerous examples of electrophilic reactions of polyfluorocarbons, has a section summarizing data on physical properties of some Lewis acids and recommendations on their use in synthesis [12].

The largest proportion of TFE is used for the polymerization into a variety of PITH homopolymers. It is also used as comonomer in the copolymerization with hexaflu-oropropylene, ethylene, perfluorinated ether, and other monomers and also as a comonomer in a variety of terpolymers. Other uses of TFE are to prepare low-molecular-weight polyfluorocarbons, carbonyl fluoride oils, as well as to form PTFE in situ on metal surfaces,13 and in the synthesis of hexafluoropropylene, perfluorinated ethers, and other oligomers.14... 

A charge of 3.04 g. (0.020 mole) of cesium fluoride (99%) and several 7-mm. steel balls are placed in a 75-ml. stainless-steel cylinder. A polyfluorocarbon-packed stainless-steel needle valve equipped with a brass 10/30 standard-taper inner joint is attached. The steel balls help to powder the cesium fluoride. The cesium fluoride is then dried by subjecting it to continued pumping at 190° in a vacuum oven for about 4 hours. 

An example of a polyfluorocarbon based waveguide sampler is shown in Figure 12.28. In this case, a 180° fiber-optic probe head directs laser light into the sample tube and collects the backscattered Raman light. The specialty resins are expensive, produced in relatively small volumes either for a specific application or looking for a market niche. Their Tg > 200°C and modulus > 3 GPa. In 1991 the total world consumption of polysulfones (PSE) and polyethersulfones (PES) was 8.5 kton. Blends of the following polymers are known polyfluorocarbons, polysiloxanes, sulfur-containing polymers (PPS, PPSS, PES, and PSF), polyetherk-etones (PEK, PEEK, PEKK), polyimides (PI, PEI, and PAI), PAr, COPO, polyphosphazene (PHZ) and LCP. 

Accordingly, Fig. 4 shows the X-ray diffraction profiles of Nafion 117 and the composite membranes, prepared as described in the experimental section, in the protonic form and dry state. The broad diffraction peaks at 26 = 12-20° result from a convolution of amorphous (20 = 16) and crystalline (20 = 17.50) scattering from the polyfluorocarbon chains of Nafion .
