Excitation of the Eu3+ or Tb3+ ions has traditionally been indirect, by broad-band UV excitation of a conjugated organic ligand which is followed by intramolecular energy transfer to the lanthanide ion / system, followed in turn by /- / emission.614 However, more recently, following the advent of tunable dye lasers, direct excitation of an excited / level is in many cases preferable. Preliminary work on 2 3S —2 3P measurements in C4+ has already taken place [124] and higher-Z ions can be studied as techniques for UV laser spectroscopy develop. The 21S o — 23Pi measurements can be extended to C4+ using a far-infrared laser, and to Si12+ using a Nd YAG laser. Direct 2 3Pj — 2 3Pj> fine structure measurements can also be extended to higher and lower Z, using appropriate lasers. The precision of these measurements can also be increased should developments in theory justify it. 

Ex vivo therapeutic strategies may take different forms. Chronic lymphocytic leukemias have been treated for long periods of time by using cell separators to reduce the burden of lymphocytosis, and to permit red cell transfusion. Laser-directed cell sorters may be used to select appropriate subpopulations of lymphocytes, which are then transfected with an appropriate gene product ex vivo and returned to the patient, where these cells will hopefully target some diseased tissue such as widespread melanoma. Expense, availability of therapy and the duration and specificity of effect currently limit the widespread application of these approaches.

Two dry film resists designed to address the needs of the laser direct-write applications for PCBs and PWBs are Riston LUV and Riston LV , developed by Dupont, and are reported to be sensitive to the UV and visible emission of argon lasers. In particular, Riston LV is based on the principles of dye-sensitized polymerization (presented earlier).
