Electrical Properties. Poly(methyl methacrylate) has specific electrical properties that make it unique (Table 4). The surface resistivity of poly(methyl methacrylate) is higher than that of most plastic materials. Weathering and moisture affect poly(methyl methacrylate) only to a minor degree. High resistance and nontracking characteristics have resulted in its use in high voltage appHcations, and its excellent weather resistance has promoted the use of poly(methyl methacrylates) for outdoor electrical appHcations (22). [Pg.261]

Electrical Properties. AH polyolefins have low dielectric constants and can be used as insulators in particular, PMP has the lowest dielectric constant among all synthetic resins. As a result, PMP has excellent dielectric properties and alow dielectric loss factor, surpassing those of other polyolefin resins and polytetrafluoroethylene (Teflon). These properties remain nearly constant over a wide temperature range. The dielectric characteristics of poly(vinylcyclohexane) are especially attractive its dielectric loss remains constant between —180 and 160°C, which makes it a prospective high frequency dielectric material of high thermal stabiUty. [Pg.429]

Commonly used materials for cable insulation are poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) compounds, polyamides, polyethylenes, polypropylenes, polyurethanes, and fluoropolymers. PVC compounds possess high dielectric and mechanical strength, flexibiUty, and resistance to flame, water, and abrasion. Polyethylene and polypropylene are used for high speed appHcations that require a low dielectric constant and low loss tangent. At low temperatures, these materials are stiff but bendable without breaking. They are also resistant to moisture, chemical attack, heat, and abrasion. Automotive appHcations account for about 116,000 t of woddwide consumption aimuaHy, with appHcations for various components including headlamp assembHes, interior instmment panels, bumpers, etc. Many automotive appHcations use blends of polycarbonate with acrylonitrile—butadiene—styrene (ABS) or with poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) (see Acrylonitrile polymers). Both large and smaH appHances also account for large markets for polycarbonate. Consumption is about 54,000 t aimuaHy. Siloxane containing interpenetrating networks (IPN) have also been synthesized and some properties were reported 59,354 356>. However, they have not received much attention. Preparation and characterization of IPNs based on PDMS-polystyrene 354), PDMS-poly(methyl methacrylate) 354), polysiloxane-epoxy systems 355) and PDMS-polyurethane 356) were described. These materials all displayed two-phase morphologies, but only minor improvements were obtained over the physical and mechanical properties of the parent materials. This may be due to the difficulties encountered in controlling the structure and morphology of these IPN systems. Siloxane modified polyamide, polyester, polyolefin and various polyurethane based IPN materials are commercially available 59). Incorporation of siloxanes into these systems was reported to increase the hydrolytic stability, surface release, electrical properties of the base polymers and also to reduce the surface wear and friction due to the lubricating action of PDMS chains 59). [Pg.62]
