Linear optical response

The first part of this paper responds to the first two problems through the calculation of the polarizability of CO (1). In this work, we bring our contribution to the three formal challenges enumerated by Ratner (2) in the special issue of Int. J. Quant. Chem. devoted to the understanding and calculation of the non linear optical response of molecules ... 

The connection between the non-linear polarization response and the generation of optical harmonics by NLO materials can be understood by considering Figure 39, which shows a typical non-linear optical response produced by a non-centrosymmetric molecule. 

The compound N,N -diphenylguanidinium 5-nitrouracilate dihydrate cristallizes in a centrosymmetric space group with one anion, one cation and two water molecules per asymmetric unit cell (Figure. 3). The inversion centre that relates the ions in the unit cell obliterates the non-linear optical response of this compound. Other 5-nitrouracil compoimds permit efficient blue-light generation from a pulsed laser source [14]. 

The analysis of these 25 compounds confirms the flexibility of dpg/dpg+. It can adopt a propeller like conformation and induce the formation of chiral crystals. It establishes predominantly two-dimensional H-bonding networks with the counter ion. From the perspective of the crystal engineer, an anticlinal conformation would maximize the non-linear properties of the molecule. However the non-linear optical response depends greatly on the molecular alignment. Non-centrosymmetric dispositions have not yet been achieved for dpg with an anti-anti conformation. The best strategy to attain NLO samples is by inducing a syn-anti conformation where a propeller structure might induce a chiral disposition of molecules and thus a non-centrosymmetric order. Another successful approach is to force crystallization with a chiral counterion. 

Multiple Heck reactions have also been applied in a number of ways to prepare polymers (Scheme 40). One-dimensionally 7r-conjugated polymers are attractive materials because of their optical and electrical properties resulting from 7r-electron delocalization along their main chains. Optical properties are usually related to the interaction of a material with electromagnetic radiation in the frequency range from IR to UV. As far as the linear optical response is concerned, the electronic and vibrational structure is included in the real and imaginary parts of the dielectric function i(uj) or refractive index n(oj). However, these only provide information about states that can be reached from the ground state via one-photon transitions. Two-photon states, dark and spin forbidden states (e.g., triplet) do not contribute to n(u>). In addition little knowledge is obtained about relaxation processes in the material. A full characterization requires us to go beyond the linear approximation, considering higher terms in the expansion of h us) as a function of the electric field, since these terms contain the excited state contribution. 

It can vary from near 100% to much smaller values, although materials in which the photostationary state is less than several percent converted are not normally considered useful photochromies. Moreover, in some cases it may be necessary to use a photochromic material such that one produces no more than a small fraction of the maximum possible conversion, in order to obtain a sufficiently linear optical response, or to avoid excessive stress in the sample. 

All molecules exhibit a linear optical response when subjected to an extemsil field that is to say, the dipole moment induced by that field (/Xi) is linearly proportional to the field [E Eq. (1), where a is the dipole polarizability, a complex number whose real part is related to the refractive index of the material and whose imaginary part relates to the extinction coefficient for photon absorption]. 

While polymeric photorefractive materials can be prepared by adding separate molecules for photo-generation, charge transport and non-linear optical response into an inert polymer, most systems studied use polymers where one or more of these components are covalently bonded to the polymer. The problem of the polarization of the material in response to an added charge shares the same physics with another long-standing problem [26] the calculation of linear and non-linear optical responses of mm. In fact the molecules are polarized by any electric field, being it an externally applied field or generated by a charge... 

Whereas the distinction between collective and cooperative effects can appear artificial, it is obvious that, since optical responses are gs properties, their nonadditivity cannot be ascribed to the delocalized nature of excited states. On the other hand, static responses can be calculated from sum-over-state (SOS) expressions involving excited state energies and transition dipole moments [35]. And in fact tlie exciton model has been recently used by several authors to calculate and/or discuss linear and non-linear optical responses of mm [36, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42]. But tlie excitonic model hardly accounts for cooperativity and one may ask if there is any link between collective effects related to the delocalized nature of exciton states and cooperative effects in the gs, related to the self-consistent dependence of tlie local molecular gs on the surrounding molecules.

As for the linear optical response, different approaches have been proposed to describe the nonlinear optical properties of nanocomposite media. Nevertheless, a few general principles can be identified. First, each component of such a medium possesses its own susceptibility however, as the typical structure size is much smaller than the wavelength, the observable result of light interaction with the medium is different from a simple combination of the individual responses of the separated constituents (again, we do not treat the case of spatially-resolved studies of die optical response). One is then again led to introduce the concept of effective medium, extended to the case of nonlinear optical properties.

It is not surprising therefore that the optical properties of small metal particles have received a considerable interest worldwide. Their large range of applications goes from surface sensitive spectroscopic analysis to catalysis and even photonics with microwave polarizers [9-15]. These developments have sparked a renewed interest in the optical characterization of metallic particle suspensions, often routinely carried out by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and UV-visible photo-absorption spectroscopy. The recent observation of large SP enhancements of the non linear optical response from these particles, initially for third order processes and more recently for second order processes has also initiated a particular attention for non linear optical phenomena [16-18]. Furthermore, the paradox that second order processes should vanish at first order for perfectly spherical particles whereas experimentally large intensities were collected for supposedly near-spherical particle suspensions had to be resolved. It is the purpose of tire present review to describe the current picture on the problem. 

Molecule-based materials exhibiting cooperative physical properties constitute one of the most active areas of interest in contemporary materials chemistry and science. An attractive chemical feature of these materials is the synthetic versatility provided by molecular chemistry. From the point of view of the physical properties, molecule-based materials can exhibit the properties of interest usually associated with the inorganic network solids, " as for example, high DC metal-like electrical conductivity and superconductivity, ferromagnetism, and non-linear optical responses. ...
