Poly acetylene electrical properties

Typical functions of substituted poly acetylenes are based on their (i) high gas permeability and (ii) electronic and photonic properties. The former originates from the rigid main chain and bulky substituents. Though electrical insulators, substituted polyacetylenes are more or less conjugated polymers, and this feature has been utilized to develop their electronic and photonic functions such as photoconductivity, electrochromism, optical nonlinearity and ferromagnetism. [Pg.981]

In the past three decades, several types of r-electron systems have shown very interesting features in electrical transport properties [1-4]. Charge-transfer complexes, intercalated graphite, conjugated polymers, carbon-60, carbon nanotubes, etc., are some of the well-known r-electron systems. Polymeric materials were considered as insulators before the discovery of metallic poly(sulfur nitride), [SN],, and the enhancement of conductivity in doped poly acetylene, (CH),, by several orders of magnitude [4, 5]. [Pg.37]

The synthesis of polymers from substituted acetylene monomers is directed toward the preparation of substituted, conjugated chains which ameliorate the negative properties of poly(acetylene)s (e.g., sensitivity to air, insolubility, and infusibility) while maintaining the desired electrical properties of acetylene s conjugated backbone alkyl- and aryl substituted polymers result. They are soluble (e.g., in toluene and cyclohexane) and proccessible, but have low conductivities (<0.1 S/cm) compared with the unsubstituted poly(acetylene). [Pg.754]
