Pollution control development

Advances in fundamental knowledge of adsorption equihbrium and mass transfer will enable further optimization of the performance of existing adsorbent types. Continuing discoveries of new molecular sieve materials will also provide adsorbents with new combinations of useflil properties. New adsorbents and adsorption processes will be developed to provide needed improvements in pollution control, energy conservation, and the separation of high value chemicals. New process cycles and new hybrid processes linking adsorption with other unit operations will continue to be developed. [Pg.287]

Several developments are being pursued to utilize coal directly, ie, automation of controls, coal and ash handling equipment for smaller stoker and pulverized coal-fired units, design of packaged boiler units, and pollution control equipment. In the cement industry coal firing has been used, because the sulfur oxides react with some of the lime to make calcium sulfate in an acceptable amount. [Pg.234]

Pressure drop in a venturi scrubber is controlled by throat velocity. While some venturis have fixed throats, marw are designed with variable louvers to change throat dimensions and control performance for changes in gas flow. Pressure-drop equations have been developed by Calvert (R-13, R-14, R-15), Boll [Ind Eng Chem Fundam, 12, 40 (1973)], and Hesketh [J. Air Pollut Control Assoc, 24, 939 (1974)]. Hollands and Goel [Ind Eng Chem Fundam, 14, 16 (1975)] have developed a generalized pressure-drop equation. [Pg.1438]

Kingman and Sheppard (Air Pollut. Control Assoc. Prepr. 75-30.3) have developed an ioniziug wet scrubber in which the charged mist particles are collected in a grounded, irrigated cross-flow bed of TeUerette packing. Particles smaller than 1 [Lm have been collected... [Pg.1440]

To provide basic geographic units for the air-pollution control program, the United States was divided into 247 air quahty control regions (AQCRs). By a standard rollback approach, the total quantity of pollution in a region was estimated, the quantity of pollution that could be tolerated without exceeding standards was then calculated, and the degree of reduction called tor was determined. States were required by EPA to develop state implementation plans (SIPs) to achieve comphance. [Pg.2155]

The mechanisms by which a jurisdiction develops its air pollution control strategies and episode control tactics are outlined in Fig. 5-1. Most of the boxes in the figure have already been discussed—sources, pollutant emitted, transport and diffusion, atmospheric chemistry, pollutant half-life, air quality, and air pollution effects. To complete an analysis of the elements of the air pollution system, it is necessary to explain the several boxes not vet discussed. [Pg.62]

There are several different strategies for air pollution control. The strategy just discussed and shown in Fig. 5-1 is called the air quality management strategy. It is distinguished from other strategies by its primary reliance on the development and promulgation of ambient air quality standards. [Pg.68]

Since air pollution is controlled by air quality and emission standards, the principal philosophical discussions in the field of air pollution control focus on their development and application. [Pg.377]

Quantitative personnel needs are determined by the answer to the following questions How many people should there be ideally to perform all functions Within specific budget restrictions, how should personnel be allocated among the several functions Personnel needs in air pollution control have been the subject of several studies, from which Tables 27-2 and 27-3 have been developed to help answer these two questions. [Pg.436]

Discuss the relative roles of the staff of an air pollution control agency, its advisory board, and its chief executives in the development and promulgation of air quality and emission standards. [Pg.443]

The company he founded in 1986, Goodfellow Consultants Inc., receited the 1992 Canada Award for Business Excellence (CABE) in the environmem field for the development of a computer program for the design of specialized industrial ventilation systems. Dr. Gtxidfellow is a recognized expert in the en tiiation, air pollution control, and air quality area.s. [Pg.1549]
