Models of chemical reactions of trace pollutants in groundwater must be based on experimental analysis of the kinetics of possible pollutant interactions with earth materials, much the same as smog chamber studies considered atmospheric photochemistry. Fundamental research could determine the surface chemistry of soil components and processes such as adsorption and desorption, pore diffusion, and biodegradation of contaminants. Hydrodynamic pollutant transport models should be upgraded to take into account chemical reactions at surfaces.

Traditionally, books dealing with sewer systems have been devoted to hydraulics and pollutant transport phenomena. In this context, urban drainage and wet-weather performance, as well as the sewer s interaction with treatment plants and receiving waters, were main focal points. 

The vertical distribution of oil products in a soil profile depends on the fluxes and ground level of soil-ground waters, which both temporally and spatially are very dynamic. The first is pollutant transport across the boundary layer or surface film to the exterior surface of the adsorbent solid phase particle (i.e.,soils/sediments and their components). 

The second is pollutant transport within the pores of the adsorbent solid phase particle, from the exterior of the particle to the interior surfaces of the particle. Similarly, a pollutant may be transported along surfaces of pore walls.

Land-use change in the coastal zone has accelerated the rate of pollutant loading for three reasons. First, removal of vegetation mobilizes materials, such as sediment. Second, the emplacement of impervious surfeces, such as roads and roofs, enhances pollutant transport as part of stormwater runoff Third, loss of natural habitats, such as wetlands, eliminates important ecosystem services, such as pollutant uptake and degradation.

Most mathematical models for particle and pollutant transport assume steady flow conditions. However, flow actually varies approximately sinusoidally over time, and breathing fluency ranges from 8 breaths/min for sedentary conditions to 50 breaths/min during sustained work and exercise.
