Some people find the effects of solvents on the nervous system desirable and purposely inhale (sniff) solvents to induce a form of intoxication. In the United States approximately 15% of high school students have tried solvent inhalation at least once. Solvents suitable for inhalation and abuse are common in the home. Home products that may contain solvents include paints, paint remover, varnishes, adhesives, glues, degreasing and cleaning agents, dyes, printing ink, floor and shoe polishes, waxes, pesticides, drugs, cosmetics, and fuels, just to name a few (Table 11.1). [Pg.137]

Because of the widespread applications of surface chemistry, practically all industries, knowingly or otherwise, make use of the principles of surface chemistry. Countless cosmetic and pharmaceutical products are emulsions—lotions, creams, ointments, suppositories, etc. Food emulsions include milk, margarine, salad dressings and sauces. Adhesive emulsions, emulsion paints, self-polishing waxes, waterless hand cleaners and emulsifiable insecticide concentrates are commonplace examples of emulsions, which fall within the province of surface chemistry. Other products winch function in accordance with the principles of smface chemistry include detergents of every variety, fabric softeners, antistatic agents, mold releases, dispersants and flocculants. [Pg.1581]

Chlorobenzene is used as a solvent for pesticide formulations, in auto parts degreasing, and in the manufacture of adhesives, paints, polishes, waxes, pharmaceuticals, and natural rubber. It is a chemical intermediate in the production of diphenyl oxide, diisocyanates, and nitrochlorobenzene. It has also been used as a fiber-swelling agent and as a dye carrier in textile processing. [Pg.556]

Use Catalyst in polyurethane foams, extraction solvent, stabilizing agent for chlorinated hydrocarbons, self-polishing waxes, oil emulsions, corrosion inhibitors, pharmaceuticals. [Pg.835]

Use Self-sanitizing polishes, waxes, and cleaners shoe polish and leather conditioners. [Pg.1138]

Monochlorobenzene and 1,2-dichlorobenzene are both colorless, flammable hquids with a sweet, penetrating odor. These are soluble in benzene and alcohols, but are insoluble in water. The vapors are heavier than air and may travel a considerable distance from the source of evaporation. Ignition and flashback to the source may lead to a fire, releasing in toxic and corrosive gases. Monochlorobenzene is a process solvent for methylene diisocyanate, the latter being used as a solvent in adhesives, polishes, waxes, pharmaceutical products, and natural rubber. [Pg.648]

This is a water-white, syrupy, alkaline liquid, with a faint ammoniacal odor. It is soluble in water and many organic solvents. It forms soaps with higher fatty acids and these are useful as emulsifying agents in textile and leather materials, water-emulsian paints, and self-polishing waxes. [Pg.763]
