Cast molding is an increasingly used manufacturing process for both rigid gas-permeable and hydrogel contact lenses. In this process, two molds, made from a variety of plastics, are used. A female mold forms the lens front surface (convex) and a male mold forms the lens back surface (concave). The plastic molds are made from metal tools or dies that are usually stainless steel, precision lathed, and polished to the specified lens design. A variety of mold materials are used. The polymerized, hardened lens is released from the mated molds and is processed in much the same way as the spin-cast lenses described above. [Pg.107]

Plastic molded clasps are commonly used to secure tops and lids on different type packages. Their holding power can be obtained from simple friction between the joint surfaces or from positive mechanical engagement. Plastic flexing capability is important because the products must flex in order to... [Pg.237]

SCRIMP process This Seeman Composites Resin Infusion Process (SCRIMP) is described as a gas-assist resin transfer molding process. As an example glass fiber fabrics/ thermoset vinyl ester polyester plastic and polyurethane foam panels (for insulation) are placed in a segmented tool. A vacuum is pulled with a bag so that a huge amount of plastic can be drawn into the mold (Marco process approach). Its curved roof is made separately and bonded to the box with mechanical and adhesive fastening. It is similar to various reinforced plastics molding processes. [Pg.522]

Light wave technologies provide a number of special challenges for polymeric materials. Polymer fibers offer the best potential for optical communications in local area network (LAN) applications, because their large core size makes it relatively cheap to attach connectors to them. There is a need for polymer fibers that have low losses and that can transmit the bandwidths needed for LAN applications the aciylate and methacrylate polymers now under study have poor loss and bandwidth performance. Research on monomer purification, polymerization to precise molecular-size distributions, and weU-controlled drawing processes is relevant here. There is also a need for precision plastic molding processes for mass prodnction of optical fiber connectors and splice hardware. A tenfold reduction in the cost of fiber and related devices is necessaiy to make the utilization of optical fiber and related devices economical for local area networks and tlie telecommunications loop. [Pg.68]

Zinc is malleable and can be machined, rolled, die-cast, molded into various forms similar to plastic molding, and formed into rods, tubing, wires, and sheets. It is not magnetic, but it does resist corrosion by forming a hard oxide coating that prevents it from reacting any further with air. When used to coat iron, it protects iron by a process called galvanic protec-... [Pg.114]

Medical and surgical equipment, orthopedic prostheses such as hip and knee joints, as well as many other biomedical products recleaned with CFC-113. In the production of plastic moldings such as syringes, spoons, bottles, and sample phials, CFC-113 may be used as a release agent. CFC-113 is also used as a carrier for ethylene oxide (ETO) in the sterilization of biologically contaminated equipment and supplies. [Pg.227]
