The traditional definition of a barrier polymer requited an oxygen permeabihty less than 2 nmol /(m-s-GPa) (originally, less than (1 comil)/(100 in. datm)) at room temperature. This definition was based pardy on function and partiy on conforming to the old commercial unit of permeabihty. The old commercial unit of permeabihty was created so that the oxygen permeabihty of Saran Wrap brand plastic film, a trademark of The Dow Chemical Company, would have a numerical value of 1. [Pg.488]

The principal chemical uses of BTX are illustrated in Figure 1 and Hsted in Table 1 (2). A very wide range of consumer products from solvents to fibers, films, and plastics are based on BTX. The consumption of BTX is approximately in the proportions of 67 5 28, respectively. However, no BTX process gives BTX in these proportions. The economic value of benzene and xylenes (especially -xylene) is normally higher than that of toluene. Because of this, processes that convert toluene to benzene by hydrodealkylation (3) and disproportionate toluene to benzene and xylenes (4) have been commercialized. In addition, reforming processes that emphasize production of either benzene or -xylene [106 2-3] have been described (5). The cellulose esters with the largest commercial consumption are cellulose acetate, including cellulose triacetate, cellulose acetate butyrate, and cellulose acetate propionate. Cellulose acetate is used in textile fibers, plastics, film, sheeting, and lacquers. The cellulose acetate used for photographic film base is almost exclusively triacetate some triacetate is also used for textile fibers because of its crystalline and heat-setting characteristics. From a practical point of view the purpose of this study was to increase the crystallizability of the polycarbonate by incorporating in it well-defined amounts of plasticizer. The ADMET polymerization of sugar-based monomers is much less explored than the ROMP approach, and only a few examples have been reported to date. Bui and Hudlicky prepared a,oo-dienes derived from a biocatalytically synthesized diene diol, from which chiral polymers (up to 20 kDa) with D-c/uro-inositol units were prepared via ADMET in the presence of 1 mol% of C4 [169]. Furthermore, several ot,co-dienes containing D-mannitol, D-ribose, D-isomannide, and D-isosorbide have been synthesized by Enholm and Mondal [170]. Also in this study, C4 was used to catalyze the ADMET polymerizations at 1 mol% catalyst loading. As pointed out by the authors, the viscosity increased as the reactions progressed and vacuum had to be applied to efficiently remove the released ethylene. Unfortunately, the polymers obtained were not further analyzed. As already mentioned above, Fokou and Meier have also reported the ADMET polymerization of a fatty acid-/D-isosorbide-based a,co-diene [126]. Furthermore, Krausz et al. have synthesized plastic films with good mechanical properties by cross-linking fatty esters of cellulose in the presence of C3 [171-173]. [Pg.36]

To replace glass, a plastic substrate must offer the properties of glass, i.e. clarity, dimensional stability, thermal stability, barrier, solvent resistance, low coefficient of thermal expansion, and a smooth surface.
