Storage and Handling. The acid should never be allowed to stand in a line completely sealed between two closed valves or check valves. Excessive pressure caused by thermal expansion of the Hquid can cause leaks or pipe mptures. AH lubricants and packing materials in contact with chlorosulfuric acid must be chemically resistant to the acid. Fires have often occurred when air is compressed. Above 140°C, lubricating oil oxidizes and forms a carbonaceous deposit on the walls of air compressor delivery lines. If the deposit is thin, it is kept cool by conduction through the pipework. But when deposits get too thick, they can catch fire. Sometimes the delivery pipe has gotten so hot that it has burst or the aftercooler has been damaged. In one case the fire vaporized some of the water in the aftercooler and set up a shock wave, which caused serious damage to the cooling-water lines. [Pg.245]

Although not widely used for gears, oil-mist lubrication is nevertheless worth mentioning here. It is a total loss technique in which the oil is supplied in the form of fine droplets carried by compressed air. Two virtues are that the lubricant can be carried long distances through pipes without severe frictional losses, and that no oil pumps are needed since the motive power is provided by factory compressed-air lines. However, unless such systems are totally enclosed, the exhaust can create a build-up of oil-mist in the atmosphere. A fire started inside a compressed air line. The valves in the piston type compressor allowed a small amount of lubricant to enter the compressed air. The lubricant accumulated in a collection point within the large pipe. Small amounts of carbon built up on the edges of the exhaust valves. At times, a heated and glowing firagment broke loose and moved down the compressed air stream. A heated fragment ignited the accumulated lubricant. Because the air was under pressure (enriched atmosphere), the lubricant burned readily, once ignited. The line filled with smoke and incompletely burned lubricant. [Pg.248]
