Compressor machines are used to increase the pressure of a gas by mechanically reducing its volume within its case. Air is most frequently compressed, but natural gas, oxygen, and nitrogen are also compressed Positive-displacement, centrifugal, and axial compressors are the three most common types used in process facilities and pipeline stations. The first function of a wellsite is to accommodate drilling operations. However, a wellsite must be designed to allow access for future operations and maintenance activity, and in many cases provide containment in the event of accidental emission. Dyes. Dyes are added to gasoline to impart color for a number of reasons. Originally, these compounds were used to identify leaded gasoline so that it would not be used for other inappropriate purposes, such as solvents. Dyes are used to identify different gasoline grades so that pipeline companies can separate tenders, and so that service stations can easily check that the correct grade was placed in the underground tanks (aq). Motor-driven, multistage reciprocating compressors have reportedly been the most popular choice for aeroderivatives. Motor-driven, oil-fiooded screw compressors are also used in some cases. High horsepower, multistage centrifugal compressors, similar to those used at many pipeline compressor stations, may be required for the newer heavy-duty units if the distribution pipeline pressure is insufficient (see Pipelines). Gas turbines have more stringent fuel-gas specifications in terms of cleanliness than do gas-fired boilers. On a typical pipeline, compressor stations are located at 81—161-km intervals and may contain up to 15 compressors. These stations may use either gas-turbine, reciprocating-engine, and/or motor-driven centrifugal compressors capable of boosting pipeline pressure and keeping gas moving at an average speed of about 24 km/h. Gas-turbine-driven units are the most popular. [Pg.17]

Filtration and water-knockout systems are used to clean up the gas before it enters a compressor. Cooling systems are sometimes required to maintain compressor discharge temperatures below 54°C to avoid damage to the pipeline s protective coatings. Automated compressor stations are typically staffed by maintenance and repair personnel eight hours per day, five days per week. Other stations are staffed on a 24-hour basis because personnel must start, stop, and regulate compressors in response to orders from the dispatch office. [Pg.17]

Coal pipelines have been built in countries such as France (8.8 km), and Russia (61 km), and pipelines are also used for transporting limestone, copper concentrates, magnetite, and gHsonite in other parts of the world. The first coal pipeline, built in Ohio, led to freight rate reductions. The pipeline stopped operation after introduction of the unit train, used exclusively to transport coal from the mine to an electric power generation station. [Pg.231]

For determining the off potentials of cathodically protected pipelines, time relays are built into the cathodic protection station to intermpt the protection current synchronously with neighboring protection stations for 3 s every 30 s. The synchronous on and off switching of the protection stations is achieved with a synchronous motor activated by a cam-operated switch. The synchronization of the protection station is achieved as follows a time switch is built into the first protection station. An interruption of the protection current is detectable at the next protection station as a change in the pipe/soil potential. Since the switching time is known, the time switch of the second protection station can be activated synchronously. Where there are stray currents, the switching method described in Section 3.3.1 cannot be used. Stray current protection stations are usually installed where the pipeline has the most positive pipe/soil potential. When the stray current drainage is cut off, a too-positive stray current exit potential that is not 7/ -free is quickly established. In distant areas a too-negative stray current entry potential that is not 71 -free will be measured. The variation in the on and off potentials or the potential difference along the pipeline will usually indicate faults that prevent the attainment of complete cathodic protection. The protection current requirement of the pipeline may be estimated from experience if the age and type of pipeline is known (see Fig. 5-3). Figure 3-20 shows the variation in the on and off potentials of a 9-km pipeline section DN 800 with 10-mm wall thickness. At the end of the pipeline, at 31.84 km, an insulating unit is built in. The current needed for cathodic protection by impressed current is supplied from rectifier units. In Germany, the public electricity supply grid is so extensive that the CP transformer-rectifier (T-R) can be connected to it in most cases. Solar cells, thermogenerators or, for low protection currents, batteries, are only used as a source of current in exceptional cases (e.g., in sparsely populated areas) where there is no public electricity supply.
