For pills of traditional Chinese medicine, the amount of intermediate obtained, before pill preparation, by a single mixing of the mixing equipment is called a batch. 

In monophasic preparations a fixed estrogen/progestin combination is present in each contraceptive pill. 

Lakes are prepared by adsorption or precipitation of a soluble dye on an insoluble substrate (e.g., alumina). They are useful in fatty products that have insufficient moisture to dissolve dyes (coated tablets, cake mixes, hard candies, chewing gum). Lakes are insoluble in most solvents including water, have high opacity, are easily incorporated in dry media, and show higher stability to light and heat. They are effective colorants for candies, pills, fats, and oils. The main characteristics and differences between lakes and dyes are well documented. ... 

Finally, another unique formulation is a chewable tablet available to women who have difficulty swallowing medications. As an alternative to oral contraceptive pills, which must be taken daily in order to reliably prevent pregnancy, non-oral contraceptives in the form of transdermal, transvaginal, and injectable preparations are available and offer patients safe and effective alternatives to the pills for prevention of pregnancy. These formulations also do not require daily administration, making them more convenient than the pill formulations.

The major oestrogen preparations used medically are outlined in Table 1.12, and their chemical structure is illustrated in Figure 1.3. The widest clinical application of oestrogens relate to their use as oral contraceptives. Most such contraceptive pills contain an oestrogen in combination with a progestin (discussed later). 

The recently introduced product Concerta is a once-a-day administration MPH delivery system called OROS (osmotically released). This delivery system creates an ascending plasma level pattern instead of the peak-and-valley pharmacokinetic profile seen in the IR preparations. Similar extended-delivery bead-technology, double-pulse preparations have been introduced for Metadate-CD at 10, 20, and 30 mg (Green-hill et ah, 2002, in press) for the spheroidal technology of Ritalin-EA, and for Adderall-XR preparations (McGough et ah, 2002, in press). Beaded stimulant preparations mix IR and delayed-release beads in a capsule. The patient can swallow the capsule whole or sprinkle the contents in food if pill taking is difficult for the child. 

Kunckel not only prepared phosphorus, but also cast it in molds to obtain the stick phosphorus now familiar to all chemistry students. He also introduced its use as a medicinal, and his famous book on the subject bears the curious title Treatise of the Phosphorus Mirabilis, and Its Wonderful Shining Pills (10). It is pleasant to know that his phosphorus researches were not without reward, for Duke Johann Friedrich of Hanover paid him an annual pension for the rest of his life (9). 

A low dosage of progestin ( mini-pill ) is used, in the form of medroxyprogesterone acetate, which is active at a very low dose. The mini-pill does not inhibit ovulation, but rather interferes with the endometrium and the cervical mucus. The use of this pill prevents most of the side effects of oral contraception, specifically nausea, water retention, and in some cases thrombophlebitis. However, a lower success rate and other frequent side effects have reduced the widespread acceptance of this preparation. Nevertheless, the mini-pill has a role to play in certain specific situations. For example, in an uncommon form of epilepsy called catamenial epilepsy, female patients will experience seizures at particular times during their menstrual cycle, reflecting the fact that seizure focus is stimulated by estrogens but inhibited by progestins. In such women, the mini-pill may afford not only birth control but also improved seizure control.
