Friedrich, Duke Johann

Kunckel not only prepared phosphorus, but also cast it in molds to obtain the stick phosphorus now familiar to all chemistry students. He also introduced its use as a medicinal, and his famous book on the subject bears the curious title Treatise of the Phosphorus Mirabilis, and Its Wonderful Shining Pills (10). It is pleasant to know that his phosphorus researches were not without reward, for Duke Johann Friedrich of Hanover paid him an annual pension for the rest of his life (9). 

In his history of the discovery of phosphorus, G. W. Leibniz stated in 1710 I also showed this inquisitive prince [Duke Johann Friedrich] another kind [of phosphorus] which one might call thermophosphorus.

Hoping to put these rumors to rest, Julius wrote to Philipp s former patron, Duke Johann Friedrich of Sachsen-Gotha, and asked him to vouch for Philipp s character, which the Saxon duke gladly did. Duke Johann Friedrich of Brunswick-Liineburg-Hanover wanted Brand to be his personal physician and alchemist at the court in Hanover. He hoped that Brand s universal medicine would allow him to drive out the devil and find large amounts of gold and silver in the Harz mountains.

As he also explained in this letter, however, he did not believe that manufactured tinctures could accomplish this rather, it required "as the only natural beginning the true primordial [ursprunglich] seed of such a tincture, without which one can come to neither a good middle nor end."...
