Kunckel not only prepared phosphorus, but also cast it in molds to obtain the stick phosphorus now familiar to all chemistry students. He also introduced its use as a medicinal, and his famous book on the subject bears the curious title Treatise of the Phosphorus Mirabilis, and Its Wonderful Shining Pills (10). It is pleasant to know that his phosphorus researches were not without reward, for Duke Johann Friedrich of Hanover paid him an annual pension for the rest of his life (9).

Traditionally, phosphorus research in the water column has been limited to measuring concentrations of operationally defined, but not chemically well-characterized, phosphorus fractions. Aquatic phosphorus is traditionally divided into particulate and dissolved fractions by filtration, with further division into phosphate, inorganic condensed, organic condensed, organic, mineral, and mixed-phase phosphorus species (Holtan et al., 1988 Maher and Woo, 1998, and references therein see also McKelvie, Chapter 1 Cade-Menun, Chapter 2 Cooper et al.. The driving force for many advances in environmental science is often the development of novel analytical techniques, and organic phosphorus research is no exception. Indeed, investigation of organic phosphorus in the environment has been hampered by the lack of suitable techniques for detecting the diverse range of chemical compounds present in soil, sediment and water samples. The element phosphorus was discovered early in the seventeenth century, as chronicled in John Emsley s excellent and fascinating book The 13th Element . Phosphorus chemistry is often perceived as an old Dame in the chemical arts. This is because many important reactions were discovered at the turn of the twentieth century, largely from the contributions of Russian chemists. Since then, phosphorus chemistry has unfortunately been considered a mature and specialized field. However, phosphorus being key to all life processes, tremendous opportunities for phosphorus research have remained ever since. So the old Dame is now experiencing a second (or third ) youth.
