Sisal. The tme sisal fiber Fora Agave sisalana is the most important of the leaf fibers ia terms of quahty and commercial use. Originating ia the tropical western hemisphere, sisal has beea transplanted to East Africa, Indonesia, and the Philippines. It is named after the port ia the Yucatan from which it was first exported. [Pg.362]

Lobaria pulmonaria (L.) Hoffm. var. meridonalis (Vain) Zahlbr. is a widespread lichen characterized by a lobed structure similar in appearance to alveolar tissue. As Gonzalez et al. (1994) pointed out in their introduction to a discussion of the chemistry of this lichen, its specific epithet reflects its use as a treatment for pulmonary tuberculosis following the Doctrine of Signatures. The varietal name was appended much later to specimens collected in the Philippines. [Pg.223]

Goby Poisoning. At least one species of the family Gobiidae, namely Gobius criniger, has been found to contain tetrodotoxin (89, 90). Fatalities to humans and animals have been reported in Taiwan, and this goby is known to be toxic in the Philippines and Ryukyu Islands. [Pg.45]

The mangrove plant Heritiera littoralis (Stercullaceae) has been utlized by natives of the Philippines as a fish poison. The hexane extract of this plant has shown toxicity to fish (Tilapia nllotlca). A novel sesquiterpene which was assigned the name heritianin has been identified as one of the compounds with ichthyotoxicity. The structure elucidation of heritianin and other compounds in the hexane extract of Heritiera littoralis is presented with bioassay data. [Pg.491]

One of the greatest benefits of the formation of Malaysia in 1963 was that it at last created a neutral and artificial name for the country distinct from that of any ethnie. It thereby could in principle, like Indonesia and the Philippines but unlike Thailand, Burma and Vietnam, emphasise the national identity without necessarily marginalising minorities. But there were still profound tensions between the concepts of core ethnie and of neutral citizenship. Lee Kuan Yew s Singapore was expelled from the new country after less than two years because his vigorous campaign for a civic or territorial nationalism— Malaysian Malaysia the assertion that We are here as of right —was considered by Alliance leaders as certain to lead to violent conflict with Malay ethno-nationalism (Mahathir 1970 122). [Pg.105]

Betel nut, the source of arecoline, is dried, smoked or salted in preparation for chewing by the natives of southern Asia, Indonesia, the Philippines and eastern Africa. The pieces are rolled in a betel leaf vine which has been smeared with quicklime. Chewing this concoction makes the saliva red. The musical South Pacific has Bloody Mary as one of its main characters. Her name denoted the color of her tongue and teeth. [Pg.66]

The marine mollusc Nerita albicilla was found to contain an oxindole alkaloid that was identified as isoteropodine (91), a previously known plant metabolite (94), by extensive NMR spectroscopic techniques (95). Four indole derivatives, named polyandrocarpamides A-D (92-95), were isolated from the colonial ascidian Polyandrocarpa sp. collected in the Philippines (96). [Pg.56]

Beyond its role as a painkiller, capsaicin has other benefits. It speeds up metabolism and lowers cholesterol levels, whilst it has antibacterial properties that may protect against peptic ulcers by killing the bacterium Helicobacter pylori which causes them. Chilli pepper s popularity in hot countries may in part be due to its ability to destroy bacteria of the kind that can cause food to go bad and this seems to be borne out by the fact that the countries with the spiciest cuisines are the hottest ones, namely Thailand, the Philippines, India and Malaysia, while those which use the least are the coldest, namely Norway, Sweden and Finland. [Pg.121]

In Asia, ICEM has 23 affiliates in four member countries of ASEAN, namely Indonesia (1), Malaysia (9), the Philippines (4), Singapore (2), and Thailand (7). [Pg.59]

Vetiver is cultivated in southern India, Indonesia, and the Philippines.101 While functioning as a fixative, at the same time it is a contributor in various perfumery applications. It is also recognized as a source of a synthetic material named vetiver acetate used in perfumes. Iris extract is obtained from rhizomes. The rhizome is peeled and dried under sunlight. Freshly harvested rhizomes bear a green note like peeled potato, but when further aged for 2—3 years they give rise to a characteristic scent of iris. Valerian105 is used for personal care and as insect repellent (Table 7). [Pg.607]

Hydroxymanzamine A was isolated from the Indonesian sponge PachypeUina sp. with moderate antitumor and anti-HSV-II activity, in 1994 ]39]. It was named as manzamine Gin some literature ]20]. 6-Hydroxymanzamine A (called manzamine Y in some references [20,41]) and 3,4-dihydromanzamine A were isolated from the Okinawan marine sponge Amphimedon sp. The Philippine sponge Xestospongia (=Acanthostrongylophora) ashmorica Hooper yielded manzamine A N-oxide, 3,4-dihydromanzamine A N-oxide, and 6-deoxymanzamine X ]10]. [Pg.191]

I recall seeing such settlements in the Philippine provinces of Tarlac and Pangasinan, where each house displayed, in large letters on the front near the steps, the names and ages of all the family members who slept there, allowing security forces on their nightly patrols to more easily identify any unauthorized visitors. [Pg.396]

Naja Naja Phillipinensis Common Name(s) Philippine Cobra... [Pg.73]

The Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) [19] was established in 1967 by five countries, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Brunei Darussalam joined in 1984, Vietnam in 1995, Laos and Myanmar in 1997, and Cambodia in 1999. The ASEAN region has a population of about 500 million. [Pg.53]

The backward and forward movements of Kuroshio waters (also named the Philippine Sea waters), which pass through the Luzon Strait at the intermediate layer, can be well confined by the 34.6%o isohaline. The maximum (minimum) intrusion of the salinity tongue arises in June (October). The warm, saltier Kuroshio water enters the SCS through the Luzon Strait from October to March, whose maximum (minimum) intrusion arises in February (September) with a volume transport of about 13.7 Sv (1.4 Sv), and the annual mean volume transport is about 6.5 Sv (Chu and Li, 2000). The saltiest North Pacific water (NPW) enters the SCS all the year round with a strong intrusion present in winter and summer, and a weak intrusion present... [Pg.537]
