Researchers at the MoneU Center (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) are using a variety of electrophysical and biochemical techniques to characterize the ionic currents produced in taste and olfactory receptor cells by chemical stimuli. These studies are concerned with the identification and pharmacology of the active ion channels and mode of production. One of the techniques employed by the MoneU researchers is that of "patch clamp." This method aUows for the study of the electrical properties of smaU patches of the ceU membrane. The program at MoneU has determined that odors stimulate intraceUular enzymes to produce cycUc adenosine 3, 5 -monophosphate (cAMP). This production of cAMP promotes opening of the ion channel, aUowing cations to enter and excite the ceU. MoneU s future studies wiU focus on the connection of cAMP, and the production of the electrical response to the brain. The patch clamp technique also may be a method to study the specificity of receptor ceUs to different odors, as weU as the adaptation to prolonged stimulation (3).

Source identification for several of the phenols, notable p-(l,l,3,3-tetramethylbu-tyl) phenol, and the nonylphenol isomers is more difficult. Concentration data shows highest levels around Philadelphia, implicating general urban activity as the primary source however, there are several high production chemical companies in the area, one of which produces these phenols commercially (10). Under these circumstances no definite source can be Identified. 

The other polyethyleneglycol compounds (no. 63-71) are also industrial chemicals which are specific to a single source and which are traceable to that source. Identification of 1,2-bis (2-chloroethoxy) ethane in the river water near Philadelphia initiated a search for a possible source. According to the 1974 U.S. Tariff Commission Report (10), one of the companies in the area is the sole commercial producer of this compound, and holds a patent for its production (28). Similarity, l-(2-chlorethoxy) 2-phenoxy-ethane, bis (2-chloroethyl) ether, and compounds 68,69, and 70 are produced or patented by the same company.
