Major customers for CRO services are the large global pharma (ceutical) companies. Half a dozen big pharma s (Pfizer, Glaxo SmithKline, Sanofi-Aventis, AstraZeneca, Johnson Johnson, and Merck) alone absorb an estimated 30% of all CRO spending. As for CMOs and also for CROs, biotech startup companies with their dichotomy between ambitious drug development programs and limited resources are the second most promising prospects after big pharma (see Section 12.3). 

More recently, Glaxo SmithKline patented an efficient fermentation rente for the biosynthetic prodnetion of thymidine (thymine-2-desoxyriboside). Key to the invention is a recombinant strain that efficiently produces high titers of thymidine by blocking some enzymes in the thymidine regulating pathway. This microbial process has now replaced the chemical route and has enabled gsk to supply the anti-AIDS drug AZT (zidovudine) to third-world countries at low cost.

In a paper dealing mainly with indications for the use of hepatitis vaccine, the data on the hepatitis A vaccines most widely used, HAVRIX (manufactured by Glaxo SmithKline) and VAQTA (manufactured by Merck), have been summarized (1). The data are based on prelicensure clinical trials and worldwide follow-up reports. No serious adverse effects have been attributed to hepatitis A vaccines. In children who received HAVRIX, soreness (15%) and induration (4%) at the injection site, feeding problems (8%), and headaches (4%) have been the most frequently observed adverse effects. In children who received VAQTA, the most common adverse effects were pain (19%), tenderness (17%), and warmth (9%) at the injection site. The reported frequencies were similar to the frequencies reported with hepatitis B vaccines.
