Monoisocyanates are mature commodities used primarily as precursors for carbamate pesticides. Growth has declined over the past decade. Increased competition from newer, more economical and effective pesticides and repercussions from the Bhopal, India disaster in 1984 have diminished their widespread use. The Bhopal disaster has caused major changes in the way methylisocyanate is made and handled. 

The classification includes fungicides, herbicides, pesticides, growth regulators, and vitamin and mineral supplements. 

Food supplies are contaminated with environmental pollutants, pesticides, growth hormones, and antibiotics. Foods, as weU as pharmaceutical agents, are further impacted by additives that are incorporated for esthetic, manufacturing, and storing purposes, rather than for nutritional properties. As a result, people worldwide are constantly ingesting toxic xenobiotics of largely unknown composition. 

Halogenation of nitromethane is utilized to produce two economically important pesticides, chloropicrin [76-06-2J, a soil fumigant, and bronopol, a biocide useful for control of microbial growth in cosmetics and industrial appHcations. 

For those pesticides that are cometabolized, ie, not utilized as a growth substrate, the assumption of first-order kinetics is appropriate. The more accurate kinetic expression is actually pseudo-first-order kinetics, where the rate is dependent on both the pesticide concentration and the numbers of pesticide-degrading microorganisms. However, because of the difficulties in enumerating pesticide-transforming microorganisms, first-order rate constants, or half-hves, are typically reported. Based on kinetic constants, it is possible to rank the relative persistence of pesticides. Pesticides with half-hves of <10 days are considered to be relatively nonpersistent pesticides with half-hves of >100 days are considered to be relatively persistent. 

For those pesticides which are utilized as microbial growth substrates, sigmoidal rates of biodegradation are frequentiy observed (see Fig. 2). Sigmoidal data are more difficult to summarize than exponential (first-order) data because of their inherent nonlinearity. Sigmoidal rates of pesticide metabohsm can be described using microbial growth kinetics (Monod) however, four kinetics constants are required. Consequentiy, it is more difficult to predict the persistence of these pesticides in the environment. 

Volume and product value for sulfonated product sectors between 1982 and 1991 increased substantially for most product groups. Pesticides (qv), however, experienced a volume decline, although the value increased 50%. Dyes had a nominal volume growth of only 6.7%. 

Many pesticides cause endocrine disruption in vertebrate and invertebrate species at concentrations that are not overtly metabolically toxic. A pesticide is defined, under the Food and Environment Protection Act (1985), as any substance, preparation or organism prepared or used for destroying any pest . Pesticides include herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, molliiscicides, roden-ticides, growth regulators, and masonry and timber preservatives. 

Some of these compounds could be considered as dietary additives, but various other terms, including pesticides, can also be used. They can have beneficial effects on the environment and this aspect will be discussed later. The ionophore monensin, which is an alicyclic polyether (Figure 1), is a secondary metabolite of Streptomyces and aids the prevention of coccidiosis in poultry. Monensin is used as a growth promoter in cattle and also to decrease methane production, but it is toxic to equine animals. " Its ability to act as an ionophore is dependent on its cyclic chelating effect on metal ions. ° The hormones bovine somatotropin (BST) and porcine somatotropin (PST), both of which are polypeptides, occur naturally in lactating cattle and pigs, respectively, but can also be produced synthetically using recombinant DNA methods and administered to such animals in order to increase milk yields and lean meat production.
