SPE has been applied to phthalate esters (plasticisers in PVC), polar pesticides (agricultural usage) and for other continuous pollution monitoring problems and environmental analyses [272]. For these applications SPE has largely displaced LLE as the preferred technique for the preparation of liquid samples, e.g. EPA method 506 is concerned with the determination of phthalates and adipate esters in drinking water.

Data of biodiesel production from Ecoinvent database is used for a typical production process. Rapeseed oil harvest is included covering biomass growth, application of fertilization, pesticides, agricultural machineries, harvest and transportation to a diesel production plant within 200km. Biocides should not be present in water used for aquaculture. Sources of herbicides and pesticides are mnoff from agricultural land, contamination of the water table, and spray drift from crop-dusting activity. Excessive levels of phosphoms and nitrogen may occur where mnoff from fertilized land enters an aquaculture faciUty either from surface mnoff or groundwater contamination. Trace metal levels should be low as indicated in Tables 4 and 5.

Between 1979 and 1991, the amounts of herbicide apphed in the United States have remained constant, but the expenditures on herbicides have increased 54%. Agricultural costs accounted for ah. of this increase and more, since herbicide user expenditures in the government/commercial and home sectors combined dropped 3 to 4% during that period. Increased weed control costs related to crop protection have also contributed to the 37% increase, since 1988, in total annual user expenditures for pesticides in general, ie, herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides. In the United States, agricultural uses (ca 1993) account for more than 67% of total pesticide user expenses and 75% of the quantity used annually. Herbicides are now the lea ding type of pesticides in terms of both user expenditures and volumes used (1). 

Agricultural Uses. Pesticides represent the second largest commercial market for hydrazine. Hundreds of hydrazine derivatives have been patented for a wide range of agricultural appHcations. Table 13 presents a sampling of the 50—60 that are commercially available or developmental products. These compounds are made from hydrazine, MMH, and UDMH and are for the most part heterocycHc nitrogen compounds (see Insect control technology). 

Thus the ADI in mg per kg per day is an estimate of the daily pesticide dietary intake that appears to be without risk over the entire human lifetime. ADI values are estabHshed and periodically reviewed by joint committees of the Eood and Agricultural Organization (EAO) and WHO of the United Nations. 

Another large-volume use for organ olithium compounds is in the synthesis of pharmaceutical and agricultural chemicals, eg, antibiotics (qv), antihistamines, antidepressants, anticoagulants, vasodilators, tranquiU2ers, analgesics, fungicides, and pesticides (116—119).
