The impact of new measures on the collaborative supply chain is contributed less by the new metrics and significantly more by the way they are managed. For example, one new metric is the direct feedback from customers via automatic reply cards in the Internet or CRM systems. However, this new data does not add any value unless appropriate actions are taken with a significant paradigm shift from measurement to management . A six-step cycle is recommended in order to implement and sustain the benefits of a performance management system with new measures. 

Time has become a key success measure in business, often even more so than many of the other measures of performance. For example, in marketing, time to market is a measure of how quickly a new product becomes available to the customer and will often determine the success or failure of the product. Time to market is one of many cycle time measures that we use in management. Cycle time is the measure of a business cycle, from the start of the cycle to its conclusions. The term is used to refer to activities in production, like the total time required to produce a product or the production cycle time. It is also used in the front office to determine the total time required to process an order, which is the order processing cycle time. From a financial perspective we find terms like cash-to-cash cycle time where we determine the amount of time a company takes to recover its financial investment. From a management perspective, cycle time is used to evaluate performance in all aspects of a business. 

The Safety Management Cycle (SMC) is a model that was introduced by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) as a part of its Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) enforcement program. SMC systematically assesses your company s safety management practices, leading motor carriers to make improvements where necessary. The SMC moves beyond identifying what the safety violation is to why the safety performance issue is occurring so motor carriers can develop or refine policies, practices, and operations to improve their safety performance. 

By performing a self-audit on yoru- Controlled Substances and Alcohol BASIC (Behavioral Analysis and Safety Improvement Category), you may be able to reduce the nrunber of violations and accidents attributed to your carrier. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) suggests using a safety management cycle as a means of continuously improving yoru- safety comphance efforts. 

Perform fuel cycle optimization and isotope concentration studies. Investigate incore fuel management and fuelloading schemes in order to achieve the desired bumup. 

The application of waste-management practices in the United States has recently moved toward securing a new pollution prevention ethic. The performance of pollution prevention assessments and their subsequent implementation will encourage increased activity into methods that 1 further aid in the reduction of hazardous wastes. One of the most important and propitious consequences of the pollution-prevention movement will be the development of life-cycle design and standardized hfe-cycle cost-accounting procedures. These two consequences are briefly discussed in the two paragraphs that follow. Additional information is provided in a later subsection. 

Perform total system safety management throughout life cycle of all assigned systems, subsystems and equipment... 

The principal role of the CRO is to contribute to the enhancement of the financial performance of its customers (Table 21.1). Improvement in the efficiency of their clients product development activities provides benefits to regulators, physicians and their patients. These include reduced cycle time, availability of external capacity, increased quality of trial management, and higher quality clinical data, all of which can result in lower labor costs. In late stage peri-approval trials, CROs may also play a role in developing safety profiles in large patient populations that are exposed to a new product after it is approved for manufacture and sale. Such trials can also assist the revenue growth of a new product. 

It is widely understood within the industry that risk is defined as the combination of the probability of harm and the severity of that harm. Within the pharmaceutical industry whenever risk is considered the equipment or product being assessed must be viewed in the context of the protection of the patient. From our perspective, analytical instruments may impact on the validity of data that determines the safety and efficacy of drug products, or on the quality of the drug product. They may also impact on the identity or potency of the drug product and therefore it is important to ensure that risk management is performed throughout the complete life cycle of the instrument.
