Performance degradation

Performance of an RO system, specifically the permeate flow rate, salt rejection and pressure drop, is a function of membrane fouling, scaling, and degradation, as previously discussed (See Chapter 11.3). This chapter covers the detailed effects of membrane fouling, scaling, and degradation have on normalized product flow, normalized salt rejection, and pressure drop. [Pg.255]

Fypass Flow Effects. There are several bypass flows, particularly on the sheUside of a heat exchanger, and these include a bypass flow between the tube bundle and the shell, bypass flow between the baffle plate and the shell, and bypass flow between the shell and the bundle outer shroud. Some high temperature nuclear heat exchangers have shrouds inside the shell to protect the shell from thermal transient effects. The effect of bypass flow is the degradation of the exchanger thermal performance. Therefore additional heat-transfer surface area must be provided to compensate for this performance degradation. [Pg.489]

Because branched ketones and aromatic hydrocarbons are used for their cost/performance benefits, they became the solvents of choice for many apphcations. Numerous solvent systems had to be reformulated to comply with Rule 66. This usually meant an increase in cost, sometimes accompanied by performance degradation. Rule 66-type regulations were adopted in many other states and cities as well. Federal specifications for coatings and many other solvent-containing materials also incorporate Rule 66 requirements. [Pg.262]

The most widely used development in HTS wire production is tlie powder-in-tube procedure with BSCCO ceramic materials. In this procedure very fine HTS powder, placed inside of a hollow silver tube, is fused as the tube lengtn is mechanically increased to form a wire. Very high magnetic fields with this wire have been reported at 4 K however, the performance degrades substantially above 20 to 30 K. [Pg.1127]

Implementation of advanced performance degradation models, necessitate the inclusion of advanced instrumentation and sensors such as pyrometers for monitoring hot section components, dynamic pressure transducers for detection of surge and other flow instabilities such as combustion especially in the new dry low NO combustors. To fully round out a condition monitoring system the use of expert systems in determining fault and life cycle of various components is a necessity. [Pg.647]

Since aerothermal performance of compressors and turbines is very sensitive to inlet temperature and pressure variations, it is essential to normalize the aerothermal performance parameters such as flow, speed, horsepower, etc., to standard-day conditions. When these corrections to standard conditions are not applied, a performance degradation may appear to occur when in fact it was a performance change resulting merely from ambient pressure and temperature changes. Some of the equations for obtaining correction to standard-day conditions are given in Table 19-3. [Pg.674]

Without antioxidants virtually all rubber products, including those made from modem synthetic rubbers, undergo unacceptable performance degradation upon aging [195]. Various aromatic materials and particularly phenols have proven to... [Pg.926]

Preventive maintenance is maintenance carried out at predetermined intervals to reduce the probability of failure or performance degradation. An effective maintenance system should be one that achieves its objectives in minimizing downtime, i.e. the period of time in which the equipment is not in a condition to perform its function. [Pg.360]

Maintenance carried out at predetermined intervals to reduce the probability of failure or performance degradation e.g. replacing oil filters at defined intervals. [Pg.560]

Figure 9 shows that the Na LGS brightness can vary by several magnitudes over fairly short times. Clearly, these variations have a strong influence on the performance of the AO system. The performance degradation with increasing... [Pg.220]

The example clearly brings out the performance degradation as output scale increases. This particular example uses ART as the numeric-symbolic interpreter. Similar degradation in performance can be shown with other interpreters such as PCA and PLS (Ali et al., 1997 Wold et al, 1996). [Pg.77]

In addition to the chemical interactions described above, microstructural changes in the electrode can lead to performance degradation after long operation time. For example sintering of the porous structure can degrade electrode performance. In the case of LSM cathodes, the sintering ability is found to be related to the strontium dopant level and stoichiometric composition of (La, Sr)xMn03. In addition, LSM with A-site deficient compositions (x < 1) sinters more readily than their B-site deficient counterparts (x > 1) [198, 199],... [Pg.167]

Thus, having both range foldover and earth s rotation at the same time results in unacceptable performance degradation as shown in Fig. 23 whereas when either one is present separately, the effect can be rectified. [Pg.211]

GaAs cells can also operate at relatively high temperatures without the performance degradation that silicon and many other semiconductors experience. This allows GaAs cells to be suitable for concentrating PV systems. [Pg.202]

The data provided clear evidence that anaerobic respiratory conditions must be taken into consideration when performing degradation feasibility studies and determining herbicide application practices in the future. [Pg.389]
