Degradation of performance

In Fig. 4 we compare the timings for three different models, the simple one K per processor, the wrapped algorithm, and a model where two states are assigned per processor sequentially. Note that until J = 50 the one K per processor model job uses the smallest amount of wall clock time. It is clear, however, that this method does not make efficient use of computer resources. The wrapped model, however, scales very well and outperforms the sequential two K per processor model at every / > 0, a clear illustration of the degradation of performance due to load imbalance. [Pg.27]

As we will show quantitatively, sampling periods must be kept quite small in order to stabilize this type of system because of the inherent degradation of performance in discrete control systems. [Pg.706]

Si(Li) detectors without Be windows ("windowless") or with thin metal-coated polymer films (Ultra-Thin Window UTW) have become an important peripheral to modern-day AEMs for the qualitative detection of elements with 5vacuum requirements because the removal of the Be window increases the probability of detector contamination (from the specimen or column environment) and consequent degradation of performance [12]. Windowless and UTW Si(Li) detectors are commonly installed with additional airlock mechanisms and only on instruments with acceptable levels of vacuum cleanliness. Thus, design constraints on modern AEMs preclude placement of the UTW detector close to the sample. In addition, loss of detection efficiency at low energies (light-element K-lines with the L-lines of transition metals all conspire to limit windowless or UTW EDS analysis of minerals to a qualitative basis only. [Pg.40]

The initial symptom was mild dizziness." Heaviness of the eyelids was a part of the initial experience In many subjects. Mild unsteadiness on standing and ialklng began between 5 and IS min after injection. At the same time, speech became muffled and slowed. Sedation, with drowsiness and dozing, started about 15-30 min after injection. About 30 min after injection, degradation of performance in the Number Facility Test began. A few subjects had visual hallucinations, and one had auditory hallucinations also. [Pg.224]

This represents a degradation of performance by a factor of 1.5n compared to ideal delay-limited control. [Pg.366]

For preliminary design purposes, the estimate from Eq. (52) is an adequate predictor of achievable PI performance when all tanks are tightly controlled. If control on one tank of a multiple CSTR system is rendered ineffective—due to uncertainty, high delay compared to the minimum delay, or simply the absence of a controller—the predicted disturbance attenuation should be increased by 50%. An exception to this is the case of variation in the sensitivity of pH to concentration on the final CSTR. In this case, no degradation of performance from that obtained with the minimum buffering (maximum titration curve slope) will occur as the performance required in terms of concentration deviations relaxes along with the controller performance. [Pg.366]

The reaction rates Qa and Qc are reduced by the lack of methanol/oxygen in the parts of the catalyst layers shaded by current collectors. It is possible to remove the precious catalyst from the shaded regions practically without degradation of performance [18], However, it is much better to change the design of current collectors. To prevent partial shading of catalyst layer by current collectors, it is... [Pg.516]

Any accumulation of air bubbles in the bottle due to accidental introduction of air or to the use of undegassed solvents may lead to an enhancement in flow pulsation and a deterioration in flow stability. It is therefore a wise policy to often check the upper part of the displacement bottle for air bubbles, and release them before a degradation of performance occurs. For trouble-free operation, it is also good practice to degas beforehand the solvent and water used for the displacement. [Pg.23]

Noise. Are noise levels controlled to prevent hearing damage and degradation of performance ... [Pg.203]

As mentioned above, LMO is expected to be cost-effective. However, there are some problems in that LMO has less capacity than lithium-cobalt oxide (LCO), and manganese dissolves from LMO into organic electrolytes, resulting in degradation of performance at high temperatures. We have been attempting to resolve these problems by stabilization of the crystal structure and reduction of the specific surface area. [Pg.324]

As already mentioned, MCFCs can be used with many different gases, such as natural gas, coal gas, biogas, and landfill gas, but certain contaminants present in these fuels can be harmful to MCFC operation and cause degradation of performance and a reduction in cell life. [Pg.83]

The performance of the human system is only at an optimum within certain environmental limits. As part of the price of its sensitivity and flexibility the human system is susceptible to the influence of a very large range of factors which can affect its performance. Unlike machines, human beings show a slow and often subtle degradation of performance over a wide range of environmental conditions, but arrive at a total breakdown only comparatively rarely. This means that individuals can maintain some sort of functioning long after they have passed the peak of their performance, but it also blurs the point at which they should stop in order to avoid errors. [Pg.251]

This he recognised as a problem as because of it he expected rapid degradation of performance due to electrolysis. To explain the long life observed although no data were given, Nernst claimed... [Pg.432]

In the "write mode the decomposition of the electrolyte occured which must have led to degradation of performances although no cycling performances are available. [Pg.454]
