Degradation of performance

In Fig. 4 we compare the timings for three different models, the simple one K per processor, the wrapped algorithm, and a model where two states are assigned per processor sequentially. Note that until J = 50 the one K per processor model job uses the smallest amount of wall clock time. It is clear, however, that this method does not make efficient use of computer resources. The wrapped model, however, scales very well and outperforms the sequential two K per processor model at every / > 0, a clear illustration of the degradation of performance due to load imbalance. 

As we will show quantitatively, sampling periods must be kept quite small in order to stabilize this type of system because of the inherent degradation of performance in discrete control systems. 

Si(Li) detectors without Be windows ("windowless") or with thin metal-coated polymer films (Ultra-Thin Window UTW) have become an important peripheral to modern-day AEMs for the qualitative detection of elements with 5vacuum requirements because the removal of the Be window increases the probability of detector contamination (from the specimen or column environment) and consequent degradation of performance [12]. Windowless and UTW Si(Li) detectors are commonly installed with additional airlock mechanisms and only on instruments with acceptable levels of vacuum cleanliness. Thus, design constraints on modern AEMs preclude placement of the UTW detector close to the sample. In addition, loss of detection efficiency at low energies (light-element K-lines with the L-lines of transition metals all conspire to limit windowless or UTW EDS analysis of minerals to a qualitative basis only.

Any accumulation of air bubbles in the bottle due to accidental introduction of air or to the use of undegassed solvents may lead to an enhancement in flow pulsation and a deterioration in flow stability. It is therefore a wise policy to often check the upper part of the displacement bottle for air bubbles, and release them before a degradation of performance occurs. For trouble-free operation, it is also good practice to degas beforehand the solvent and water used for the displacement.

As mentioned above, LMO is expected to be cost-effective. However, there are some problems in that LMO has less capacity than lithium-cobalt oxide (LCO), and manganese dissolves from LMO into organic electrolytes, resulting in degradation of performance at high temperatures. This means that individuals can maintain some sort of functioning long after they have passed the peak of their performance, but it also blurs the point at which they should stop in order to avoid errors.
